Position Overview

We are seeking a dynamic and creative Communications Officer to join our team on a one-year contract. This role is pivotal in amplifying our voice, engaging our members, and driving political action campaigns. The successful candidate will report to the Director and collaborate with union leadership to enhance our visibility and impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Social Media Management: Develop and execute social media strategies across platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Create engaging content, monitor trends, respond to inquiries, and analyze performance metrics to grow our online presence.
  • Internal Communications: Facilitate effective communication with COPE members through newsletters, email updates, intranet postings, and member events. Ensure timely dissemination of union news, policy updates, and resources to foster member engagement and solidarity.
  • External Communications for Political Action Campaigns: Lead the development and implementation of communication plans for political advocacy initiatives. This includes crafting press releases, media kits, campaign messaging, and coordinating with external partners to mobilize public support for labor rights and social justice issues.

Additional duties may include supporting event promotions, website updates, and crisis communication as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 2-3 years of experience in communications, preferably in a union, non-profit, or advocacy setting.
  • Proven expertise in social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite, Buffer) and analytics (e.g., Google Analytics).
  • Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to adapt tone for diverse audiences.
  • Experience in political or campaign communications is an asset.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to labour rights and progressive values.
