Communications & Marketing Volunteer

Help us tell our story — and bring hope closer to the women who need it most.

The Mission

To uplift and empower women who are experiencing or at-risk-of homelessness through in-kind support, education, and community participation. At The Shoebox Project, we believe that a small gesture can have a profound impact. You’re doing so much more than delivering gifts; you’re delivering hope and human connection.

The Opportunity

This is a hands-on opportunity for a creative, organized communicator. As our Communications & Marketing

Volunteer, you’ll work directly with our Executive Director and alongside our Social Media Contractor to help tell our story through newsletters, social media, and digital campaigns — right through our busiest season of the year, the Holiday Drive. You’re doing so much more than posting content; you’re building the connections that make our mission possible.

Your Impactful Responsibilities

  • Digital Marketing: Support email campaigns and digital promotion tied to our Holiday Drive and other seasonal campaigns.
  • Website Analytics: Track and report on website traffic and engagement, and help translate data into simple, actionable takeaways.
  • Design & Templates: Create and maintain reusable, on-brand templates for social media posts, along with other graphics for newsletters and web content.
  • Photography: Take high-quality photos at events, drives, and volunteer activities — capturing genuine, dignified moments we can reuse across newsletters, the website, and social media.
  • Social Media Monitoring: Help monitor our social channels, flag engagement opportunities, and support scheduling and community response.
  • Newsletters: Help draft, edit, and schedule regular donor, volunteer, and chapter newsletters.
  • Other Tasks as Needed: Our team is small, so you’ll pitch in on other communications and marketing tasks as they come up — a great way to build a broad skill set.

What You Bring to the Table

  • Academic Background: Currently enrolled in a communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or related program (or equivalent experience).
  • Communication Skills: Strong written communication and an eye for clear, engaging copy.
  • Digital Savvy: Comfort with social media scheduling tools, basic design tools like Canva, and website/email analytics platforms.
  • Self-Starter Spirit: You’re comfortable working independently in a remote, flexible environment.
  • Organization: You’re detail-oriented and reliable with deadlines.
  • Passion for the Mission: A genuine interest in the nonprofit sector and our work empowering women experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
  • Inclusive Approach: Respectful, inclusive communications, consistent with our commitment to dignity and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Logistics

  • Time Commitment: 5–10 hours per week, with some flexibility.
  • Duration: September through January, aligned with our Holiday Drive.
  • Reporting & Support: You’ll report to our Executive Director and collaborate with our Social Media Contractor throughout your term.

Why Volunteer with Us?

Beyond real-world, portfolio-ready experience, you’ll gain mentorship from our Executive Director, a front-row seat to our organization’s biggest and most meaningful campaign season, and the chance to help build connections that give women hope, confidence, and a sense of belonging.
