
Communications Manager - Parental Leave Position (1 Year)
About the Role
Environmental Defence Canada (EDC) is a leading Canadian environmental advocacy organization that works with government, industry and individuals to defend clean water, a safe climate and healthy communities. EDC is looking for a Communications Manager who can anticipate and meet the needs of a dynamic environment. This is a full-time contract position with an excellent benefits package that includes a health spending account, 4 weeks vacation, employee and family assistance plan, half-day Fridays during the summer months, and an RRSP matching program. Salary range is $70-75K depending on experience. This role will be reporting to the Director of Communications.
Purpose of the Role
The communications manager will foster a supportive and collaborative team structure where innovation and strategic thinking is encouraged. EDC’s work is grounded in identifying a theory of change and designing a path that will lead to securing stronger environmental protections. The communications manager will design and deliver effective communications plans that educate and prompt people to take action on our campaigns.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and execute creative communications plans that use digital advocacy tools, media relations, social media, and traditional marketing to advance issue area goals
- Social media strategy development, content creation and community management; develop relationships with key influencers
- Write and edit communications materials, including blogs, website text, press releases, op-eds, newsletters, social media content, reports
- Develop media relations strategy, pitch and coordinate media interviews, train/brief spokespeople, develop relationships with key reporters and influencers
- Work effectively with colleagues, coalition partners, suppliers
- Analyze activities & prepare reports to inform future communications activities
Skills and Experience
- 5+ years experience as a communications professional, ideally in an area advancing social change
- Excellent written, verbal and persuasive communication skills; excels at distilling complex subject matter into accessible information others can act upon; strong design eye
- Ability to develop and execute social media strategy to grow followers and boost engagement, including content planning, audience targeting, performance analysis, and ongoing optimization based on insights and trends
- Demonstrated project management skills, including work planning, budget development and tracking, and reporting on outcomes
- Knowledge of database programs, communications analytics and management tools (e.g., Google Analytics, Sprout Social, Meltwater), design programs and video/photo editing software (e.g. Canva)
- Ability to think critically and make well-informed, timely decisions
- Strong background in environmental issues is an asset
Location
This role will be a hybrid role, part time in the office and part time work from home. Greater Toronto Area preferred.
