Communications Manager, 6-month contract
Location: remote or hybrid
Position: part time, 6-month contract with a possibility to renew.
Looking to be a part of the frontier of animal protection? We need someone, equally dedicated to the animals, to join our team. Our team engages in electoral politics and legislative advocacy.
Who We Are: At Animal Alliance of Canada our long-term goal is a renewed relationship between humans and animals: one based on respect and empathy, not exploitation, dominance and violence.
Founded in 1990, Animal Alliance is a not-for-profit organization fighting for the protection of all animals through advocacy, political action, rescue and education. As a not-for-profit, we strive to raise the status of all animals and actively engage with elected representatives to encourage them to pass sound animal and environmental protection laws.
In 2005, supporters of Animal Alliance created the Animal Alliance Environment Voters Party of Canada (now the Animal Protection Party of Canada) – a federally registered political party and North America’s first political party focused exclusively on environmental and animal protection. We have the knowledge, experience and expertise to give progressive environmental and animal protection policies political relevance at the municipal, provincial and federal levels of government.
Opportunity: Animal Alliance is seeking a Communications Manager to support the organization’s public education, advocacy, fundraising, and campaign communications.
Reporting to and supporting the Director of Development and Communications, the Communications Manager will help bring communications strategies to life across multiple channels, including email, social media, website, donor communications, media materials, and campaign channels. This role is responsible for managing the day-to-day coordination, drafting, scheduling, and distribution of communications that advance Animal Alliance’s mission.
The ideal candidate is both a strong writer and a thoughtful digital communicator, with good design instincts and the ability to help turn campaign messages into polished social media, video, email, and web content. They should be highly organized, mission-driven, and comfortable translating complex animal protection issues into clear, compelling communications for a range of audiences, while helping to maintain consistency in Animal Alliance’s voice, messaging, tone and visual identity across all public-facing materials.
Key Responsibilities:
- Draft communications materials, including emails, social media posts, website copy, blog posts, newsletters, campaign updates, advocacy alerts, donor stewardship messages, media and event materials, and other written content.
- Repurpose long-form content into shorter assets for social media, email, website, and other digital channels.
- Assist with proofreading and quality control to ensure communications are accurate, polished, and aligned with organizational priorities.
- Manage the scheduling and posting of content across social platforms.
- Draft and support the development of social content, including captions, graphics, videos, and other digital assets.
- Monitor social media engagement, comments, messages, and relevant trends, escalating sensitive issues as needed.
- Help draft and coordinate supporter journeys, including advocacy follow-ups, donation thank-you communications, campaign updates, and calls to action.
- Work with internal team members to gather stories, updates, statistics, photos, and other content needed for communications.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Skills:
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Demonstrated experience drafting content for email, social media, websites, newsletters, campaigns, or nonprofit communications.
- Experience developing social media content, including graphics, short-form video concepts, reels, captions, and campaign assets.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
- Familiarity with social media platforms, email marketing tools, content management systems, and basic digital analytics.
- Good judgment, attention to detail, and comfort working through approval processes.
- Ability to work collaboratively while also taking initiative and managing day-to-day tasks independently.
- Commitment to Animal Alliance’s mission and values.
- Experience in animal protection, advocacy, nonprofit communications, fundraising, policy, or public education is considered an asset.
- Experience with tools such as Mailchimp, Canva, WordPress, Meta Business Suite, Google Analytics, or similar platforms is considered an asset.
Working Relationship
This role works with the Director of Development and Communications to execute communications strategies and to ensure campaigns, fundraising initiatives, and public education efforts are delivered effectively and consistently.
The Communications Manager is not expected to set the overall communications strategy independently but will play a key role in managing implementation, drafting materials, coordinating distribution, and ensuring communications are timely, organized, and aligned with the organization’s goals.
How to Apply
Interested applicants should submit a resume and a portfolio or samples of past communications work.
Portfolio materials may include examples of social media content, graphics, videos, email campaigns, newsletters, website copy, campaign materials, or other relevant communications assets.
Applications that demonstrate strong writing ability, good design judgment, and experience creating engaging digital content will be prioritized.
We thank all applicants for their interest, but only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
