
Communications and Engagement Coordinator
This is an immediate opening for a full-time (five days/week) contract position working at our Abbotsford office or remotely from a Lower Mainland BC location. This position is a one-year contract.

Reporting to the Resilience Lead of the Emergency Planning Secretariat (currently housed at the Lower Fraser Fisheries Alliance) and working closely with the Lower Fraser Floodplains Coalition (LFFC), the Communications & Engagement Coordinator will support the LFFC with dynamic communications and engagement that inspire action, amplify local voices, and drive momentum for our Climate Resilient Coastal Communities Project. This position will be instrumental in advancing the BC Flood Strategy at a regional level in the Lower Fraser.
As the Communications & Engagement Coordinator, you will be at the forefront of developing and distributing engaging content for a range of audiences through digital channels (website, email, social) and community events, as well as mainstream media. The successful candidate will be an experienced communicator who understands the power of storytelling and community engagement in driving change. They will be proficient with a variety of communications tools, will be familiar enough with the flood adaptation landscape in the lower mainland and will be ready to hit the ground running.
QUALIFICATIONS
We are seeking an individual who:
- Has experience developing and implementing communications, outreach, and branding plans that align with project goals and audience needs
- Is a skilled writer, with the ability to professionally draft, edit, proofread, and publish materials for print, online, and social media
- Has a broad understanding of natural disasters, climate change, and First Nations rights
- Is adept at translating information on complex and challenging issues into accessible, compelling stories for a variety of different audiences
- Brings a strong commitment to justice and equity, with ability to develop communications that are culturally safe, inclusive, and responsive
- Has experience producing visually engaging materials such as reports, infographics, social media graphics, or short videos, and is comfortable using design tools like Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar platforms
- Has experience managing and promoting events, including venue booking, catering, outreach, budget tracking, and honoraria
- Is highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong time and project management skills, including tracking engagement records and maintaining up-to-date contact lists
- Experience managing media relations—including writing and distributing press releases, pitching stories, maintaining media contact lists, and building relationships with media outlets—is considered an asset.
- Is comfortable using digital tools for internal/team communications and project management (e.g. Slack, Outlook calendars, Zoom, etc.)
- Has experience with content management on WordPress or similar website platforms
- Has a degree in communications, public relations, or a related field, and/or a minimum of three years’ experience in a communications role
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate closely with the Lower Fraser Floodplains Coalition’s Coordinate Working Group to develop, refine, and implement a communications strategy focused on advancing floodplain resilience, climate adaptation, and foster strong partnerships with Indigenous communities and local governments
- Conduct research and create a diverse range of coalition-related communications materials—including blog posts, newsletters, social media content, briefing notes, and printed collateral—and assist with their timely dissemination to target audiences
- Proofread, copy edit, and support the layout and graphic design of communications and publications to ensure materials are clear, engaging, visually appealing, and consistently aligned with LFFC’s branding and messaging guidelines
- Design and execute targeted outreach campaigns that effectively communicate the risks and impacts of flooding and climate change in the Lower Fraser region, engaging a broad spectrum of audiences such as local government and First Nations staff and leadership, farmers, and the general public
- Manage and update content on the LFFC website and associated digital platforms to maintain accuracy, accessibility, and user engagement
- Assist with media relations activities, including drafting and distributing press releases, maintaining organized media contact lists, and building and nurturing productive relationships with journalists and media outlets that align with the Coalition’s mission and objectives
- Co-organize coalition events, meetings, and webinars, overseeing all logistics from venue coordination and promotional efforts to live event administration and timely follow-up communications with attendees to maximize engagement and impact
- Collaborate with the Convene and Advocacy Working Groups to strategically coordinate the timing and messaging of key outreach efforts, events, and campaigns in alignment with the Coalition’s broader strategic goals and priorities
- Work closely with LFFC members to ensure consistent application of branding, style, and messaging standards across all coalition communications and materials
- Actively participate in regular meetings of the coalition’s Coordinate and Advisory Working Group, contributing insights and supporting collective decision-making
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Resilience Lead or Working Group Leads, demonstrating flexibility and a proactive approach to supporting the Coalition’s goals
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- $64,000-$70,000, commensurate with experience

About the Emergency Planning Secretariat: The Emergency Planning Secretariat (EPS), a department of the Lower Fraser Fisheries Alliance, supports 31 Mainland Coast Salish communities across the Lower Mainland in building emergency preparedness and resilience. Guided by Indigenous rights and the Sendai Framework, EPS facilitates collaboration among communities, governments, and partners to ensure inclusive, culturally relevant emergency planning and response. EPS supports the Lower Fraser Floodplains Coalition (LFFC), a collaborative group focused on enhancing flood resilience across the region. This role will primarily work with the LFFC while benefiting from the broader resources and partnerships of EPS and LFFA.
