POSITION: Children, Youth and Families Program Director For Norval United Church

POSITION SUMMARY: The Children, Youth and Families Program Director is responsible for developing and implementing a ministry for Children, Youth and Families with the community of faith. This is a team position that involves working in collaboration with, and under the direction of, our Lead Minister and Chair of our Faith Formation Team. The Director will be a baptized, mature individual of strong Christian faith, and will bring energy and leadership to the development of programs that foster spiritual growth, and positively impact children, youth, and families.

ACCOUNTABILITY: This team member will be co-supervised by our Lead Minister and Chair of the Faith Formation Team. Ultimately this team member is accountable to the Executive Committee of Norval United Church in all matters except discipline. In matters of discipline, the person is accountable to the regional council. The Ministry and Personnel Committee of Norval United Church will appoint a liaison person to support and encourage the Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary

  • Create opportunities to connect, and build relationships with, children, youth and families who are part of the Norval United Church congregation and the wider community.
  • Develop and implement programs for children, youth, and families which nurture spiritual growth, facilitate fellowship, and foster community engagement.
  • Provide care and support to children, youth and families and communicate with the Lead Minister so that follow up pastoral care can be provided.
  • Organize and facilitate regular youth group meetings.
  • Work with other leaders to engage and integrate youth into broader congregational activities.
  • Work with other leaders to develop youth focused outreach.
  • Network with other youth leaders in both the wider church and community to engage a wide web of support and opportunities for individuals within the community.

Secondary

  • Plan and coordinate youth led worship services (approx.) 4 times a year.
  • Create opportunities for inter-generational activities which benefit children and youth.
  • Work with the Faith Formation Team and the Camp Advisory Team to participate in the process of hiring the summer camp director.
  • Work with summer camp leadership and the Faith Formation Team to build relationships and engage camp families with NUC.
  • Recruit, train and support effective lay leaders from within the congregation.
  • Attend meetings of the Faith Formation Team and complete administrative duties related to children, youth, and families programming.
  • Prepare reports for church leadership, keep a record of children and youth involvement, and monitor outcome of programming.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • This position is open to a baptized, mature individual of strong Christian faith with relevant education, training, and experience in working with children, youth, and families.
  • Must understand the theology of the United Church of Canada and agree with, strive to promote, and work under, the Vision, Mission, Core Values and Statement of Inclusion of Norval United Church.
  • Must be flexible with respect to duties and responsibilities as Norval United Church grows and adapts its structure to meet emergent needs and opportunities.
  • Has demonstrated experience in planning, development and implementation of child, youth and family programs.
  • Must be able to plan and coordinate worship services with youth.
  • Has demonstrated ability in leadership, teaching, visioning, patience, and communication.
  • Has demonstrated ability to attract and inspire volunteer leaders, support people and build community.
  • Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have strong organization and implementation skills.
  • Must have social media proficiency.
  • Must be relatable, welcoming, caring, forgiving, and authentic.
  • Demonstrated capacity to serve as an advocate for children and youth.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively and independently once provided with direction, and able to manage time effectively.
  • A current vulnerable sector check.
  • Must be able to travel locally (within Georgetown and surrounding area) for meetings with children, youth, and families as well as other church business.

WORKING HOURS

  • 20 hours per week. Must be available to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
  • This position requires the individual to be primarily on-site (including, but not limited to, Sunday morning), with the remaining time including travel to off-site community events, and some work that may be done remotely.
