Job Description: Children & Youth Bereavement Support Worker
Accountability:
The Children & Youth Bereavement Support Worker reports directly to the Executive Director or designate, and works collaboratively with the Children & Youth Program Coordinator, with additional support from senior program staff and the Executive Director or designate.
General:
The Children & Youth Bereavement Support Worker will provide grief support through 1:1 and group settings with a focus on art, recreation and play-based supports for grieving children and teens. They will assist with the development and delivery of child and family focused activities, seasonal day camps and summer programming, and relevant workshops and/or information sessions for clients, schools, and other community organizations. The Support Worker will in conjunction with the Children & Youth Program Coordinator ensure program delivery meets the needs of our clients and is consistent with the mission and mandate of the Society.
This is a full-time, in-person role, working from our Supportive Program Centre in Langley, BC, and based on 37.5 hours per week. Wage: $27.00/hourly with full benefits.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Facilitates intakes with parents/guardians and assesses children and teens for one to one and group support participation and/or other services as appropriate; ensuring parental consent and follow-up.
• Provides one to one and group support and other relevant programming that is art, recreation and play-based, and inclusive of both children and teens.
• Provide education and outreach support for local schools and community organizations; liaising and building relationships with local school counsellors and teachers.
• In collaboration with other staff, is responsible for the development and delivery of relevant workshops and training for schools, and other organizations focused on understanding the impacts of loss, and supporting grieving children and teens.
• Develop and deliver seasonal day programs and other activity-based events and programs for grieving children and teens and their families.
• Ongoing collaboration with other program staff (Adult Bereavement and Palliative Support) to ensure that program and service development and delivery is proactive and responsive to needs of our clients and community; and participate in delivery of C&Y content for Hospice Training Program.
• Ongoing collaboration with the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator around the ongoing recruitment, engagement, support and training of volunteers through the C&Y program.
• Work in collaboration with Langley Hospice Society staff and/or volunteers in the planning and implementation of programs and events as appropriate.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
• Gathers, records, maintains, evaluates and reports program information to the Executive Director on a monthly basis, provides an annual Program Report, and other reporting by request.
• Responds to the requests of people, in person, over the phone and via email in a courteous, respectful and timely manner.

• Participates in monthly staff and program meetings, training programs and workshops as required.
• Maintains a current knowledge of our approach to providing support and adheres to all Langley Hospice Society policies and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
• A combination of education and experience and/or relevant professional degree.
• Additional education/training and experience with grief support, hospice/palliative care is an asset.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience working directly with children and youth in one-to-one and/or group settings.
• Successful completion of a criminal record check.
• Must maintain a valid BC Driver’s License and have regular access to a vehicle.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Experience working with children and teens.
• Knowledge of child and teen development.
• Understanding of the use of art, recreation and play-based supports as a way of helping children and teens explore difficult thoughts and emotions.
• Creative; ability to develop engaging and age appropriate, art, recreation and play-based activities; values play and recreation as a mode of communication with children and youth.
• High level of diplomacy, discretion and confidentiality as well as the ability to interact effectively with children, parents, staff, volunteers and the public.
• Recognize the importance of peer support group work in addition to staff and/or volunteer-led one-to-one sessions with children and youth.
• Sense of fun and adventure while maintaining a balance of energy, flexibility, and responsibility; is physically active and in good health.
• Caring, compassionate, warm, friendly and confident.
• Flexibility required in hours worked to accommodate client needs, this can include after school, evening and weekend and weekend scheduling.
• Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills. Experience with report writing, and program outlines.
• Strong organizational and computer skills including the ability to work on a variety of projects simultaneously. Experience with data entry, word, PowerPoint, excel, Gmail, Canva, etc.,
• Comfortable with developing material and interacting on behalf of the organization via social media (Facebook, Instagram, other…)
