Child & Youth Worker
Contract - Full Time
3 - 5 years of experience
$19.48 per hour

Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of domestic violence and its impact on women and Children
  • Knowledge and ability to integrate wholistic and evidence based practice into the planning and evaluation of client and program intervention from a trauma informed lens
  • Compliant to legislations that directs the reporting of child abuse, neglect and maltreatment
  • Case Conference regarding clients and assist with the development of care plans for complex clients with internal & external agencies where appropriate
  • Complete intakes, provide assessments and interventions as needed, develop a plan of care, manager individual counseling, referrals and discharge
  • Provides crisis support and counselling for families with an emphasis on the youth \ children
  • Provides information and referral to community supports and services
  • Develop safety and departure plans with children
  • Acts as an advocate for children and mothers and provides support and accompaniment
  • Acts as an advocate for children and mothers and provides support and accompaniment
  • Research external programs that will strengthen and build youth resilience
  • Aware of Agencies that can be used for referrals to support the youth needs
  • Plan, create, coordinate and deliver skill-building groups, social, recreational, and life skills activities
  • Skilled in assessing behavioural and emotional stressors
  • Providing support, encouragement and practical non-violent techniques for women dealing with behavioural and emotional problems in children
  • Plans and implements programs for mothers and children

Administration

  • Computer input, correspondence
  • Create and maintains children’s files and completes all shelter documentation
  • Maintains service statistics
  • Report writing as required
  • Submit weekly reports
  • Knowledge of WISH database for statistical analysis
  • Grant writing as required
  • Managing budget allocation – books, requisition, accountability, maintenance
  • Social Justice, Community Education and Outreach
  • Outreach and participation in community coalitions and actions
  • Participation on Agency Committees as required
  • Public Speaking and community education
  • Liaison with school, day-care and other community resources
  • Active involvement in the partnership programs

General

  • Works co-operatively as a member of the case management team
  • Attends regular team meetings, staff training sessions and planning meetings
  • Provide support to students and volunteers in the department
  • Assists with other duties as required, from time to time, aiding in the efficient operation of the organization
  • Completes intake and assessment of children and mothers
  • Passionate about making a difference in the lives of youth from low socioeconomic communities
  • Aware of the importance of cultural programming
  • Practice patience and values the importance of being a keen listener
  • Apply safety standards training for crisis management support for children and mothers
  • Provides information and referral to community supports and services
  • Assist with the development of safety and departure plans with youth
  • Providing support, encouragement and practical non-violent techniques to youth during crisis

Qualifications and Experience

  • Post Secondary College Diploma or University Degree with emphasis on Social Justice, Social Work or Youth Development
  • Four (4) years directly related work experience
  • Knowledge of issues around youth violence, behavioural issues
  • Experience in the area of Youth development
  • Understanding of youth and family issues
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
  • Experience working with youth from low socio-economic communities
  • Must be equipped to participate in the event of an emergency
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of strength-based supportive counselling
  • Experience in program development and delivery
  • Demonstrate ability to work individually and as part of a team
  • Strong ability to work with and relate to diverse groups
  • Good working knowledge of computers and appropriate software
  • Exercise good problem solving skills and judgement
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Must possess a valid CPR First Aid Certificate
  • Must have a valid police reference check

Health and Safety

  • Works in compliance with the OHSA & applies all health & safety policy & procedures
  • Takes reasonable precautions to ensure the health and safety of everyone who may be at risk
  • Identifies and corrects issues that can be addressed immediately
  • Cooperates with the Joint Health and Safety Committee, and assists inspectors in carrying out their duties and elects JHSC representatives
  • Participates in hazard analysis
  • Reports to Building Manager anything that is likely to be unsafe or hazardous to health & safety of staff or anyone else, and any contravention of the Act or Regulations
  • Reports every accident, injury, illness, or other occurrence arising in the course of, or in connection with work, that has caused injury to staff or another person
  • Participates in health and safety orientation, education, and training
  • First Aid, CPI/ UMAB, WHMIS and Food Handling Certification
