Professional Volunteering

Professional volunteering at Solution Community is a skills-based service held to the same standard as paid work — consistent, accountable, and high-quality. Volunteers are core contributors, not peripheral supporters.

Expectations:

  • Consistent weekly availability (10–15 hrs)
  • Timely communication and responsiveness across async tools
  • Full ownership of assigned responsibilities and follow-through
  • Active participation in team meetings and operational workflows
  • Alignment with organizational values: compassion, integrity, collaboration, action

About Solution Community

Solution Community is an international 501(c)(3) nonprofit building a platform that connects nonprofits, businesses, philanthropists, and volunteers to drive real-world social impact. We operate like a distributed tech startup — lean, async, and execution-focused — with volunteers from 80+ countries and team members with backgrounds from Apple, Google, Netflix, Meta, Toyota, Walmart, and others.

Our Mission: To foster a global community of compassion, uniting individuals and organizations to solve the world's social problems — bridging nonprofits, businesses, philanthropists, and volunteers to create meaningful change for current and future generations.

Our Vision: A world where every person has the opportunity to thrive, united by collaboration, compassion, and action. Solution Community is building the infrastructure that makes that possible.

Summary of Role

The Chief Operating Officer is a core member of the leadership team, reporting directly to the CEO. This is an operator role — not an administrator one. You'll own the execution layer of the organization: keep the strategy current, translate it into actionable work, and make sure teams actually deliver. You'll work hands-on with department heads across product, marketing, community, and tech, staying on top of the tools and unblocking teams week to week. If you prefer managing docs over driving outcomes, this role isn't for you.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy Management & Execution

  • Maintain and continuously update the org-level strategy as priorities evolve
  • Translate strategic goals into quarterly and weekly execution plans
  • Track delivery against KPIs; flag blockers before they compound
  • Run regular leadership syncs to align chiefs and team leads on priorities and progress
  • Identify gaps between strategy and reality — and close them

Operational Leadership

  • Own the operational rhythm: planning cycles, standups, reviews, retrospectives
  • Build and maintain lightweight processes that help a distributed volunteer team move fast without chaos
  • Develop and implement policies and systems that scale with the organization
  • Ensure all programs and initiatives land on time and meet organizational goals

Team Management & Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Lead and grow the Operations team with a culture of ownership and accountability
  • Work directly with all chiefs and team leads to coordinate cross-functional delivery
  • Remove blockers, resolve dependencies, and keep execution moving across departments
  • Support onboarding of new volunteers so they contribute quickly and independently

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years in operations, product management, or general management
  • Proven executive or senior leadership experience — ideally in a startup or IT company
  • Demonstrated ability to build, update, and execute strategy in a fast-moving environment
  • Strong project management skills with hands-on experience in async, distributed teams
  • Data-driven approach to tracking progress and making decisions
  • Clear communicator — written and verbal — across diverse, multicultural teams
  • Comfortable with ClickUp, Slack, Google Workspace, or equivalent remote tooling
  • Genuine alignment with Solution Community's mission

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in IT startups or tech-adjacent nonprofit organizations
  • Background leading volunteer-based teams or distributed orgs
  • Familiarity with OKRs or similar goal-tracking frameworks
  • Experience with process design and operational scaling at early-stage organizations
  • Exposure to nonprofit finance, fundraising, or compliance

What We Offer

  • Direct collaboration with a global leadership team (Apple, Google, Netflix, Meta, and others)
  • Real ownership and decision-making authority — this is not a support role
  • A multicultural team spanning 70+ countries
  • Async-first, fully flexible work — no micromanagement
  • Meaningful impact on global social causes
  • Formal recommendation letter upon successful completion of your volunteer term
  • Opportunities for personal and professional growth within a mission-driven organization.
