Indspire is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to report directly to the President & CEO. This is a replacement role and a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for providing strategic direction and oversight of the organization’s financial operations.
The CFO leads financial planning and decision-making, overseeing all strategic and operational financial matters, including budget management, accounting, cost-benefit analysis, short- and long-term forecasting, and the securing of new funding.
In this role, the CFO is accountable for the overall integrity of the accounting function, provides expert financial counsel to the President & CEO and Board, and drives long-term fiscal strategy to ensure the organization’s financial health, sustainability, and strong stewardship of its assets.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you’ll be:
Finance Leadership and Strategic Financial Oversight
- Providing leadership, direction and management to the Finance Team ensuring the effective implementation of all aspects of Indspire’s accounting and financial programs including clear direction, training, and guidance.
- Establishing departmental goals, timelines, and deliverables in alignment with Indspire’s goals and requirements related to long-term financial planning and strategic oversight.
- Providing leadership in the development of long-term strategic financial objectives.
- As part of the executive team, contributing to strategic planning and operational execution of the organization’s mission and mandate.
- Overseeing all accounting and financially related activities for the organization, including, Budget Management, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, cash management, and payroll.
- Providing strategic oversight and managing any financially related activities of the organization in compliance with GAAP, government regulations, and the organization’s financial policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Monitoring the organization’s long-term financial growth and change to recommend and ensure appropriate adjustments are made to policies, methods, accounting practices, processes, and staffing.
- Reviewing and providing advice to ensure the proper documentation and recording of all contracts, agreements, commitments for financial obligations made by Board of Directors, CEO, COO, and Vice Presidents/Department Heads.
- Managing Cash Flow – planning, forecasting, monitoring and reviewing operating revenues and expenditures to ensure appropriate cash flow and financial stability.
- Providing all required information, reports and assistance to the Finance and Risk, and Investment Committees of the Board; acting as a resource in the development of policies for approval by funding agencies and the Board; working closely with designated investment advisors reviewing their recommendations and ensuring adherence to standards, policies and controls.
- Providing all required information, reports and assistance to the Audit Committee of the Board; ensuring the provision of appropriate information on the annual audit, reviewing financial statements and management recommendations and effectiveness of financial controls.
- Providing all required information, quarterly and annual financial reports and year end financial projections to the Executive Committee of the Board.
- Reviewing and vouching for investment trust fund statements and reports as determined by Finance and Risk, Audit and Investment Committees of the Board.
- Communicating with Bankers and Investment Advisers on various financial issues and arranges items such as Terms of Banking Services, line of credit arrangement, investment of assets, etc.
- Overseeing the preparation of RFP’s and participates in the selection process
- Establishing VISA accounts for staff, setting credit limit, approving expense reports and processing payments.
- Providing oversight to controls including building security/alarm codes, long distance access codes, accounting codes, etc.
- Preparing overall compensation analyses, and projections for budgeting and financial projection purposes.
- Working with President and CEO and COO on year end base compensation, pay for performance, and bonus payments.
- Reviewing and acting as signing officer for contribution agreements, contracts, government funding agreements and reports, cheques, EFT for scholarships and bursaries, other documents related to financial and human resources issues and provides related financial advice.
- Providing accounting services to various events.
Budget Preparation, Financial Reporting, and Forecasting
- Planning, designing and preparing organizational budgets and working with the COO and VPs to prepare departmental budgets.
- Co-ordinating departmental budgets and consolidating overall organization budget for review and approval by COO and CEO.
- Maintaining accurate financial records, including the recording and integration of accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll records into appropriate ledgers and accounts.
- Reviewing trial balances and financial statements.
- Preparing monthly, quarterly and annual summary reports to relevant stakeholders, including banks, government agencies, CEO, COO, Board of Directors, its committees and management.
- Directing the research, design and preparation of appropriate financial policies, procedures and systems for the organization, along with monitoring effectiveness of same.
- Reviewing and coordinating the preparation of the year end T3010 Registered Charity Information Return.
- Monitoring the Master Reporting Schedule of all financial reporting requirements
- Monitoring and ensuring up to date record keeping and availability of financial information for revenues in the Global Revenue Chart.
- Ensuring up to date record keeping and availability of financial information for scholarships and bursaries in the Scholarship Allocation Account.
- Overseeing the implementation and ongoing success of finance related systems and software, such as fund raising, data management software, and BBF allocation software, working collaboratively with the management team as required.
- Reviewing cash flow reports for all contribution agreements.
- Planning, designing and preparing tracking documents to project and account for revenues by program.
- Developing and ensuring timely availability of regular forecasts, budgets, and management reports.
- Monitoring departmental budgets and reports variances to CEO and COO.
Year-End and Audit Preparation
- Arranging and discussing with Auditors the audit planning, procedures, requirements, timeline and cost involved.
- Directing year-end workflow; ensuring accounts closed off correctly at year-end.
- Preparing analysis on revenue and expense accounts with comparisons to budgeted amount and previous year’s amount, and explanation on the variances.
- Providing information on contracts, investments, legal issues etc.
- Directing, monitoring, liaising with auditors to ensure data, testing, follow-up of confirmations are complete and reconciled.
- Ensuring Audited Financial Statements are received and published within approved timelines.
- Providing information and cooperation to audits requested by Government or Funders.
Qualifications
- Completion of a University Graduation with specialist financial education and CPA designation.
- Progressive experience with minimum of 10-15 years related experience in finance and senior management.
- Experience in leading and managing staff.
- Knowledge of and experience in Indigenous communities strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated openness to learning and willingness to engage in cultural competency training.
- Knowledge of current accounting practices in accordance with GAAP.
- Knowledge of specialized not-for-profit accounting best practices.
- General knowledge of current human resources management practices in the areas of employee contract management, payroll and benefits and compensation management.
- Communicates effectively both written and orally.
- Customer service orientation.
- Demonstrated ability to think and act strategically.
- Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
- Ability to work with sensitive information with complete confidentiality.
- Travel between Six Nations and Toronto offices is required.
- Must be able to work occasionally in the evening and weekends.
