GENERAL SUMMARY

The CFO is a key member of the BGC Ottawa senior management team and reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer. Key responsibilities include oversight and management of the finance function (financial reporting and budgeting, cash management and forecasting, treasury, etc) as well as providing analytical support and input to Advancement, Operations, Strategy and communications with the Board of Directors. As well, activities related to risk management are included in this role.

RESPONSIBILITIES / ACTIVITIES

Responsibility 1: Lead and Oversee Finance Function:

Responsible for the delivery of timely, cost effective and efficient accounting and financial reporting systems, policies and processes that reflect industry best practices to meet the current and future business requirements of the Club.

Activities:

  • Financial Reporting – monthly and quarterly unaudited financial statements as well as annual audited statements (working with external auditor)
  • Treasury – manage cash and other assets (including overseeing management of investment portfolio) as well as liabilities to ensure adequate financial flexibility is maintained at all times. Ensure systems, processes and controls are in place to adequately protect the assets of the Club while ensuring operational efficiencies.
  • Ensure that all government remittances (including CRA), filings and other corporate financial obligations are completed on time and accurately.
  • Ensure that the Club operates in a manner that respects and complies with all obligations associated with maintaining its charitable status.

Responsibility 2: Financial Planning:

Responsible for leading the ongoing budgeting and forecasting process as well as monitoring performance of actual vs plan. Make appropriate recommendations to the senior team (and Board) to remedy any variances, if required.

Activities:

  • Plan and lead the full business plan and budget development cycle ensuring full engagement of all levels of management and alignment with strategic and fiscal objectives.
  • Financial projections and forecasting – prepare and maintain a rolling detailed cashflow forecast working with Advancement and Operations report regularly on status to senior management team and to the board as appropriate
  • Oversee the capital planning to ensure that the Club is planning over the long term to protect and maintain its assets appropriately.
  • Provide analytical support to Advancement team in maintaining a rolling forecast of the various revenue streams including maintaining key performance metrics required to achieve objectives; provide analytical support where needed to secure and maintain funding
  • Provide analytical support to Operations team (and Programming and Facilities Committees) in maintaining a rolling forecast of operating expenses and capital expenditures including maintaining key performance metrics required to achieve objectives
  • Incorporate various key performance metrics into a monthly financial and operational dashboard
  • Provide support to CEO in preparation and assembly of monthly board books and actively participate in board discussions relevant to CFO role

Responsibility 3: Risk Management:

Responsible for the oversight and management of the assets of the Club. Maintain and manage a comprehensive risk management and insurance program.

Activities:

  • Oversee risk management and insurance requirements and manage the insurance annual renewal process to ensure the assets of the Club are appropriately protected at all times and that associated risks are appropriately mitigated.
  • Ensure appropriate controls and procedures are in place to ensure achievement of risk control objectives
  • Report to CEO (and Board) as necessary on topics relating to risk management

Responsibility 4: Management of Finance team and support to Finance Committee:

Responsible for the effective supervision and leadership of the Finance staff team and support to the Finance Committee.

Activities:

  • Lead and coach the team to ensure highly motivated, efficient and effective finance staff team.
  • Define and implement professional development plans to support and develop staff on an ongoing basis.
  • Ensure that team resources are deployed optimally to meet business needs and goals.
  • Provide support, reports and information as required to support the Finance Committee in its oversight of the financial assets of the Club.

Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Desired Education, Training and Experience

  • An accounting designation or advanced finance degree is required
  • Prior experience ideally in the CFO function or equivalent.
  • Experience working or volunteering within the not-for-profit sector is an asset.

  • Comfort in managing the IT function either as a result of prior experience and/or a solid familiarity with IT and a willingness to learn.
  • Proven ability to work with others in meeting objectives.
  • High standard of ethics and integrity.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Most work is performed in a clean, quiet, and comfortable office environment. The employee may occasionally be required to stand, walk, lift, or crouch. The role involves prolonged computer use and screen time. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for Club or donor events.
