Position Overview

The BC Health Coalition is looking for an experienced Campaign and Communications Specialist to support a vibrant and effective coalition of over 800, 000 members working to strengthen public health care in B.C. The Campaign and Communications Specialist takes direction from the Executive Director, who oversees strategic directions and budget. The Campaign and Communications Specialist then uses their passion for public health care, knowledge of organizing principles and campaigning best practices to develop and execute campaigns of the BC Health Coalition. Within the context of the campaign goals and objectives, the Campaign and Communications Specialist will use their knowledge base and creativity to produce a variety of materials, tactics, and events to engage Coalition members and the public with the goal of maintaining the principles set out in the Canada Health Act and improving public health care in BC.

The Campaign and Communications Specialist can expect to work some evenings and weekends to support campaign events, as required. Some travel outside of the Lower Mainland to support the Coalition’s campaigns may also be required. The ideal candidate will possess a class 5 driver’s licence and will have access to a personal vehicle (travel expenses and mileage will be reimbursed).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Produce high quality written, visual, and/or multi-media materials including member newsletters, website updates, social media content, policy briefs, campaign documents, and news releases that engage and educate the public
  • Stay informed of key developments in health policy and gather relevant news and research for Coalition information, discussion, and potential policy development
  • Support member fundraising campaigns and work together with other staff on digital and other fundraising activities
  • Support individual and organizational member engagement, including through Regional and General Meetings, Project Teams, and Working Groups
  • Develop, revise, and execute campaigns, communications, workshops, and events
  • Build opportunities to engage and educate non-member stakeholders in BCHC campaigns and actions, including forums, press conferences, etc.
  • The Campaign and Communications Specialist will be available for public speaking, presentations to member organizations, facilitations of public and membership meetings and workshops
  • Provide training, capacity building, and leadership opportunities to support the skills development of individual and organizational Coalition members
  • Develop Coalition materials and resources to train and support Coalition leaders, volunteers, and the public on Coalition campaigns and actions
  • Maintains and develops relationships with like minded groups, such as the Canadian Health Coalition across the country
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field
  • A demonstrated passion for public health care, social services, and community organizing
  • Experience/awareness and critical analysis of the public health care system and/or issues related to privatization of healthcare; knowledge of the social determinants of health is an asset.
  • Ideally, candidate will have experience in a coalition environment
  • A minimum three years’ experience in either grassroots community organizing, working with the trade union movement, health care, or non-profit leadership in an organizer or similar role; experience in a campaign setting is an asset
  • Excellent teamwork skills and ability to be self-directed and self-motivated when leading projects independently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to understand and write for different audiences and formats as required
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate in a respectful and cooperative manner with the public, Coalition members, and staff
  • Intermediate to expert skill and experience with the MS Office suite including Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Experience with digital campaigns and the use of effective social media, and knowledge of effective use of digital organizing and campaign tools
  • Experience using Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, such as Nation Builder
  • Demonstrated experience or ability to learn use of online platforms such as Dropbox, Google, Zoom, etc.
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to principles and practices in advancing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
