Location: Camp Sunshine, 60 Lakeshore Ave, Ward's Island (Ferry tickets to be provided by employer)

About Sunshine Centres for Seniors
Sunshine Centres for Seniors provides social, recreational and health promotion activities at 11 centres in Toronto including our flagship Camp Sunshine centre on Ward's Island. Our mission is to reduce social isolation and to improve the health and well-being of seniors. We have a special focus on providing programs to marginalized seniors including seniors with disabilities, 2SLGBTQIA+ seniors, low-income seniors, newcomer seniors and seniors from diverse communities. Our programs are inclusive, welcoming and supportive and they provide seniors with a sense of belonging and purpose. Activities are designed to promote cognitive stimulation and enhance mental and physical health. We offer programs in Toronto Seniors Housing buildings, Toronto Community Housing buildings, community centres, and at our summer centre on Ward's Island.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with planning daily summer recreation activities, interactive theme weeks and community special events;
- Implement daily programs including and facilitating enjoyable activities for seniors and people with disabilities, meal preparation and serving, space set-up and take down, transporting seniors to and from ferry docks via electric golf carts;
- Participate in the development and implementation of special events and programs such as our Intergenerational Rainbow Pride Festival, Indigenous Peoples Day, Annual Strawberry Festival, Sports & Games Fair, and the Environmental Action Day;
- Ensures the program meets the needs of senior participants;
- Designs and implements daily activities and community events, facilitating sing-a-longs, games, nature walks, exercises and others activities;
- Lead golf cart tours, driving golf cart responsibly and respectfully on Ward’s Island;
- Implementation of all activities including intergenerational programs;
- Laisse with corporate volunteer groups, and ensure programs run smoothly;
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- As per HRSDC Canada Summer Job funding requirements, Candidates need to be between 15 - 30 years old, and either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred and be legally entitled to work in Canada. Priority will be given to youth that are underrepresented in the labour market, including youth with disabilities, Black and other racialized youth, Indigenous youth, 2SLGBTQIA+ youth;
- Diploma or degree (or in progress) in activation, gerontology, recreation and leisure, social services, community services, or similar field of study;
- Experience and commitment to working with seniors including seniors from diverse cultures and backgrounds;
- Available to work Monday to Friday the entire summer;
- Strong time management, interpersonal skills, problem solving and conflict resolution skills; Positive attitude and an openness and flexibility to adapt to ever changing situations;
- Ability to work independently as well as with a team;
- Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential;
- Experience planning and implementing recreation programs;
- Valid driver’s license.
- Experience in gardening/landscaping, leading volunteers is an asset;
- Fluency in multiple languages is an asset;
Working Conditions
The position is in-person Mondays to Fridays.
Ability to carry and transport program supplies and equipment to and from program locations. Ability to lift/move tables and chairs during program set-up and clean-up.
Ability to drive electric golf cart.
