Board Treasurer - CPA
About HOPE
HOPE — Helping Other Parents Everywhere — is a registered Canadian charity that has supported parents and caregivers for nearly two decades. HOPE is a network of evidence-based peer support groups for parents concerned about their teen or adult children. The challenges families face are as diverse as our community — a young person’s mental health, substance misuse or addiction, technology overuse, conflict with the law, leaving or struggling at school, and more. We support families from all walks of life and backgrounds.
When a teenager or adult child is struggling, the parents or those in a parenting role often carry it quietly and alone. HOPE changes that. Through peer support led by parents who have walked the same road, families find understanding, practical suggestions, and the steadying reassurance that they are not alone.
“HOPE is an oasis for families facing difficulties they never imagined — a safe place to learn, share, and strategize.”
— HOPE parent
The opportunity
Every parent who finds support at HOPE relies on our being steadily there when they reach out. As volunteer Treasurer on our Board, you help keep it that way — providing the financial oversight that lets HOPE plan and operate with confidence. It is a strategic, advisory governance role you would carry out as a director on the HOPE Board. With an Executive Director and bookkeeper in place, this is not a hands-on accounting position. Our board is well structured, our meetings are focused and purposeful, and our culture is to make the work enjoyable while we fulfil our governance responsibilities.
What you’d do
- Provide financial oversight and guidance to the Board and Executive Director
- Review financial reports and support development of the annual budget
- Help ensure compliance with CRA requirements and sound financial controls
- Advise on financial policy, risk, and emerging governance issues
- Chair the Finance and Audit Committee and serve on the Executive Committee
(Full role description available on request.)
What we’re looking for
- CPA designation
- Experience with nonprofit or charitable financial oversight an asset
- Comfort advising from a governance perspective rather than doing day-to-day financial management
- A clear communicator who can make financial information accessible to a diverse board
- Interest in HOPE’s mission
Time commitment
Roughly 4–6 hours per month: four virtual board meetings, a virtual AGM, executive committee meetings, and finance committee meetings when constituted, plus preparation and review.
In closing
Your skills and experience would directly support HOPE’s mission to stand alongside parents and young people facing significant challenges. We would welcome a conversation.
