Horizons of Friendship is a Canadian non-profit; international development agency committed to eliminating the root causes of poverty and injustice through the cooperation of people from the South and the North.
Horizons of Friendship supports Central American and Mexican partner organizations that undertake local initiatives, which further this goal.
In Canada, we raise awareness on global issues and work with Canadian organizations at the local and national levels to bring about positive and lasting change.
Position Summary
The Board treasurer is responsible for overseeing the organization’s finances. The treasurer regularly reviews financial reports, ensures records are maintained, and interacts with accountants and auditors to help keep the board informed of financial matters.
Board Member Terms:
Each Board Member is elected by the current Board of Directors at initiation and will serve until the annual general meeting of that term. Directors may be appointed or elected as Members at Large for unlimited consecutive terms. This is a volunteer position.
Key Responsibilities of a Board Treasurer
- Participating virtually or in-person in Horizons of Friendship’s Board Executive and Board Meetings
- Working with board members and staff to address any red flags identified in monthly financial reports and answer questions regarding such reports
- Reviewing monthly financial reports, compare expenses with budgets and income, and identify and anticipate problem areas
- Provide insight/recommendations on financial decisions facing the organization and financial policies
- Interacting with accountants and auditors to help keep the board informed of financial matters
- Assisting the Executive Director in preparing the annual budget
- Presenting annual budget to the board for approval
- Reviewing the annual audit, review of T3010 (Charity Return) and annual financial statements
- Ensuring that assets are protected and invested according to organizational policy
- Bank signing authority for processing and approving payments
- Approving transfers to partner organization overseas
- Attending of regular board meetings, in addition to ad hoc meetings as needed
Required Qualifications
- Financial experience working with Non-for-Profit Organizations and Charities (Accounting standards for Non-For-Profits ASNPO)
- Familiarity with fund accounting (Restricted/Unrestricted funds)
- Experience working with international organizations is an asset
- Knowledge of financial reports, Controls and Policies
- Ability and willingness to work with chief financial officer, controller, accountant or bookkeeper, and auditors as necessary
- An ideal candidate has their CPA designation
