Position Overview
The Board Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the financial health, integrity, and accountability of VIHRC. The Treasurer works closely with the Executive Director and the full Board to ensure sound financial management, transparency, and compliance with legal and funder obligations.

Key Responsibilities
Financial Oversight
- Provide regular reports to the Board on VIHRC's financial position, including revenue, expenses, and variance from budget
- Review financial statements for accuracy and completeness prior to Board meetings
- Ensure the Board understands the organization's financial position and can make informed decisions
Budgeting
- Lead or oversee development of the annual budget in collaboration with staff and relevant committees
- Present the budget to the full Board for approval
- Monitor actual performance against budget throughout the year
Compliance & Risk
- Ensure VIHRC meets its financial reporting obligations as a registered organization (e.g., annual filings, CRA requirements)
- Flag financial risks or irregularities to the Board in a timely manner
- Support the annual audit or financial review process, including liaison with external auditors/accountants where applicable
Governance
- Coordinate financial oversight activities
- Ensure appropriate financial policies and internal controls are in place and followed (e.g., signing authority, expense approval, reserve policy)
- Support Board-level strategic planning by providing financial context and constraints
Communication
- Act as the primary point of contact for financial questions from other Board members
- Present financial information in a manner that is accessible to Board members without financial backgrounds
- Support funder reporting as needed, in partnership with staff
Qualifications
- Preferred: experience with budgeting, financial statements, or nonprofit financial management
- Strong analytical and communication skills with the ability to translate financial data into clear guidance for the Board
- Familiarity with nonprofit financial compliance requirements in British Columbia
Time Commitment
- Estimated 1-2 hours per month on average (inclusive of meetings), with higher demand (3-5 hours) during budget season and year-end reporting
- 1 hour board meeting every other month
