Passages is a self-directed learning centre for families who have chosen a different path for their children’s education. We are a registered charity, now in our sixth year, with a community of learners, staff, and families who believe deeply in what we’re building — and a Board that takes seriously the responsibility of making sure it lasts.

We are looking for a Treasurer who understands that mission and financial sustainability are not in tension. Our ideal candidate is someone with the financial expertise to keep us on solid ground, the engagement to be a genuine collaborator with our Executive Director, and enough curiosity about alternative education to find this work meaningful.

About Passages
Passages Centre for Self-Directed Learning is a registered charitable organization that offers youth a place to be self-directed learners, supported by mentors, and rekindle their curiosity and love of learning. We are a democratic community composed of mentors, learners, families, and volunteers, working together to create rich experiences. Passages is a non-hierarchical community where young people and adults come together as learners and facilitators, sharing interests, passions, curiosity, knowledge, and questions.

We are committed to accessibility and offer a tiered member fee model based on family income. Our annual revenues are approximately $200,000, and we are focused on building the organizational foundations that will carry us into our next decade.

About the Board

  • Seven Directors with Officer roles: Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary
  • Monthly meetings, ten times per year (September–June), two hours each — hybrid format with in-person meetings at a central Toronto location accessible by TTC
  • Board members review materials in advance and serve as active ambassadors for Passages
  • Estimated time commitment: 5–7 hours per month, including meetings, preparation, and ED support
  • Two-year Officer terms, renewable up to three times
  • Decisions are made by consensus

Treasurer Responsibilities

This is a governance role, not a bookkeeping role. As Board Treasurer, you will:

  • Act as a responsive financial collaborator with the Executive Director — available between meetings, not just at them
  • Review monthly financial statements and payroll prepared by the ED and external bookkeeper, ensuring accuracy and flagging concerns to the Board
  • Ensure the Board maintains sound financial oversight and follows appropriate internal and external controls
  • Lead the annual budget process in collaboration with the Executive Director and present it to the Board for approval
  • Provide strategic financial perspective on organizational decisions, including risk, opportunity, and long-term planning
  • Ensure CRA and government filings are completed and submitted on time
  • Liaise with our external accountant to support the annual audit or review
  • Support the development of a Finance Committee as organizational capacity grows

Experience and Qualifications

Required:

  • Experience in financial administration or financial management
  • Genuine responsiveness — the ED should be able to reach you and get a timely answer
  • Comfort operating in a consensus-based, non-hierarchical environment

Preferred:

  • CPA designation or equivalent professional accounting background
  • Experience with nonprofit governance or the charitable sector
  • Familiarity with CRA charitable reporting requirements
  • Experience with QuickBooks and Wagepoint
  • Ability to translate financial concepts across varying levels of financial literacy
