Board President (Volunteer) Description

Position Overview

The President of Lily's Place Animal Sanctuary holds a pivotal leadership role, responsible for promoting the organization's mission, leading the board in the absence of the Board Chair, and supporting strategic planning and external relations. This role requires exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and a deep commitment to the organization's values and goals.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Governance
• Board Leadership: Chair board meetings in the absence of the Board Chair, ensuring effective governance and decision-making.
• Strategic Planning: Collaborate with the Board Chair, executive director, and board members to develop and implement strategic plans.
• Board Development: Help recruit, orient, and develop board members, fostering a cohesive and engaged board.

External Relations
•Community Representation: Represent the organization in the community, fostering relationships with key stakeholders, donors, and partners.
• Public Speaking: Act as a spokesperson for the organization at events, meetings, and public engagements.
Advocacy: Advocate for the organization’s mission and goals, building awareness and support.

Support and Collaboration
• Partnership with Executive Director: Work closely with the executive director to support organizational operations and strategic initiatives.
• Board Support: Provide guidance and support to the Board Chair and other board members, promoting effective governance practices.
• Committee Involvement: Participate in and lead specific board committees as assigned, ensuring active participation and leadership.

Fundraising and Development
• Fundraising Support: Assist in fundraising efforts, including donor relations and development initiatives.
• Resource Development: Contribute to identifying and securing resources necessary to achieve the organization’s strategic goals.

Qualifications

• Leadership Experience: Proven experience in a leadership role, preferably within a nonprofit organization.

• Strategic Thinking: Strong ability to think strategically and guide the organization towards achieving its goals.

• Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire various stakeholders.

• Commitment: Deep commitment to the organization’s mission and values.

• Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, capable of building relationships and working collaboratively with diverse groups.

Commitment

The President role is a leadership-intensive volunteer position that requires a high level of engagement, strategic thinking, and reliability.

    • Meeting Leadership: Facilitate quarterly board meetings (held virtually) and collaborate with the Executive Director and Secretary to set agendas and ensure productive, inclusive discussions.

      • Time Commitment: Be available regularly for asynchronous check-ins with the Executive Director and respond to board-related matters in a timely manner. Average time commitment is approximately 6–10 hours per month, depending on the season.

        • Oversight and Strategy: Guide the board in fulfilling its governance duties, support the Executive Director as a thought partner, and help steer organizational priorities in line with the sanctuary’s mission and strategic plan.

          • Succession and Recruitment: Play an active role in board development by helping recruit, orient, and mentor other board members.

            • Fundraising and Visibility: Serve as a visible ambassador of Lily’s Place. This includes supporting key fundraising efforts (e.g., campaign planning, donor introductions, or personal contributions) and representing the sanctuary publicly when appropriate.

              • Shared Stewardship: As the board’s lead, the President helps uphold a culture of accountability, compassion, and collaboration, ensuring that our leadership practices align with the values of Lily’s Place and the communities we serve.

              This role can be fulfilled remotely; however, local candidates are encouraged (but not required) to attend select in-person events or site visits annually.

              Compensation:

              Service on Lily’s Place Animal Sanctuary’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs related to Board duties.
