Board Members
Green Thumbs Growing Kids (GTGK) has cultivated environmental stewardship by offering hands-on garden and food education to urban children and their communities for over 25 years. We are seeking several passionate and committed volunteers to serve on our Board of Directors!
Why join the GTGK Board?
Recent winners of the Toronto Community Champion Award, we advocate for a garden in every school! GTGK runs school garden programs that provide all ages and all backgrounds with experiences in growing native tree species in their own mini-nurseries, farming kid-friendly small fruits and vegetables, learning about worm composting, and much, much more! Our work promotes food literacy, provides physical and mental health benefits, and helps kids learn about taking care of the environment in a hands-on way!
What will you receive?
Joining the GTGK Board means joining a grassroots organization that punches far above its weight! You will share in the pride of helping create real impact for children and youth. You will also have the opportunity to meet and network with fellow Board members and other friends of GTGK, build skills and receive training, and play a real, substantive role in the success and growth of GTGK.
Board expectations
The GTGK Board of Directors is a working board, setting and following up on strategic goals, while remaining nimble and adaptable to opportunities as they arise. Fundraising is an essential part of our Board duties, and all board members are asked to play a significant role in our fundraising efforts and events. The Board of Directors is also responsible for forming an HR committee on an as-needed basis, completing the ED annual review & contract renewal, and participating in strategic (and succession) planning.
All roles on the Board of Directors are expected to commit 10-15 hours per month to attend meetings, participate in at least one committee, represent GTGK at community events, and assist with ongoing Board projects. Board terms run for two years and may be renewed for a total of four years. Meetings of the Board are monthly and largely virtual, with active participation expected from all Board members.
All roles involve fundraising to some extent - Board members are champions of GTGK! You are right for our Board if you are passionate about children and youth, the environment, food literacy, gardening, spending time outdoors, having fun while learning, or all of the above!
