Friends & Advocates Peel is seeking eight passionate and dedicated individuals to volunteer on our Board of Directors, including Chair, Vice Chair and Treasurer positions. This is an exciting time to contribute your expertise, leadership and vision to our organization.
The Board is seeking diverse representation, both in professional experience and personal background. We also strive for inclusivity to reflect the perspectives of the community we serve and who align with our values of respect, trust, leadership and diversity.
About Us:
Friends & Advocates Peel is a not-for-profit registered charity, community-based mental health organization serving those aged sixteen and over who have or are experiencing social isolation and recovering from mental/emotional distress. We are funded by the Ministry of Health, through Ontario Health Central Region. We are fully accredited by the Canadian Centre for Accreditation. Since 1986, Friends & Advocates Peel has provided social rehabilitation and recreation programs to the communities of Brampton, Mississauga, Dufferin and North Etobicoke. We are passionate about providing clients with opportunities to develop strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills. Our goal is for clients to achieve success in respect of the social determinants of health (a safe place to live, ways and means to contribute to the community, and the development and maintenance of positive relationships with self/family/friends) by providing skill development opportunities which include psycho-social support, education, training, social interaction and assertive life skills.
Key Responsibilities:
As a Board member, you will:
Provide strategic guidance and oversight for the organization’s activities.
Advocate for the organization’s mission and serve as an ambassador in the community.
Assist in fundraising and donor cultivation.
Ensure compliance with governance and financial oversight responsibilities.
Qualifications:
We are looking for individuals who have:
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Professional experience in areas such as finance, legal, human resources, mental health and addictions, leadership, public relations, strategic planning, risk management, change management, healthcare system, board governance, quality & safety, equity, diversity & inclusion, technology, non-profit management, etc.
Personal and professional integrity when dealing with diverse perspectives and ideas.
Prior board or leadership experience.
Board members may receive education and development opportunities as determined by the Board Chair and CEO.
Time Commitment:
Directors are expected to devote two to five hours per month for Board business and governance development. Board members are expected to attend eight board meetings per year (approximately two hours per month, excluding July, August and December). Meetings are virtual with one in-person Board meeting.
Term Length:
Three years, with up to three terms per Director
