BOARD MEMBER

NewMakeIt is a collaborative space facility in Newmarket that enables members of the local community to start innovative, creative, entrepreneurial or learning endeavours. We provide the physical space, tools, and technology to turn ideas into reality. NewMakeIt is a space for community members to work, make, and learn.

We are a not-for-profit organization that is made possible through the funding and support from the Government of Ontario, the Regional Municipality of York, and the Town of Newmarket. We are looking for Board Members to join the team! Please note that this is a volunteer position.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Board Member will join the existing Board of Directors in governing the organization and providing clear strategic direction and well-defined expectations, so our workshops and services are successful. The ideal candidate cares about not-for-profit organizations and is a strategic thinker with strong leadership and communication skills.

NewMakeIt would benefit greatly from Board members that bring a diverse and broad experience base from a variety of sectors including technology, legal, sales, accounting, engineering, architecture, etc.

The Board Member will be able to participate in board meetings as a voting member in the development of strategy and policy. The Board meets approximately 8-10 times per year and has an Annual General Meeting (AGM) where the membership and the community are invited and encouraged to attend.

The Board Member can expect to commit approximately 3-6 hours on average per month, with some months being busier than others. Board meetings are typically held at 7pm on the third Tuesday of every month. The meetings are typically 90 minutes in length. The Board Member can attend these meeting virtually and are encouraged to attend in person when a venue is selected. The Board Member will:
• Participate and advise on the strategic direction for NewMakeIt.
• Advocate for NewMakeIt’s work and mission in your own network and circle of influence.
• Provide guidance, suggestions, and expertise on matters that would be beneficial for the long-term growth of NewMakeIt.
• Be informed of agenda items, read material in advance and contribute knowledgeably to the discussion and decisions of the Board.
• Be informed about NewMakeIt’s policies, programs, services, and the needs of the community and NewMakeIt’s constituents.
• Develop an understanding of Board governance and risk management strategies.

BOARD MEMBER OBJECTIVES & COMMITMENT:
• Background in finance, fundraising, sales, or entrepreneurship is considered an asset for NewMakeIt.
• Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking to strategy.
• Participate through informed decision-making that reflect the best interests of the organization, community, and individuals served.
• Participate in meetings and volunteer expertise for two to three hours monthly.
• Lead and expand the organization’s resource base by sharing expertise and actively supporting fundraising efforts.
• Bring a high degree of interest or expertise in the areas the organization addresses for long-term strategic growth.
• Previous board experience is an asset but not required.
• Demonstrated ability to contribute to strategic planning and non-profit development efforts.
• Identify and declare any conflict of interest or potential conflict of interest.
• Comply with all Board policies.


APPLICATION PROCESS:

The nominations and selection for Board members will be performed consistent with by-laws and board procedures. Successful nominees will need to provide a criminal records check.
