Role Description:
The Volunteer Board Member (Treasurer) plays a key governance and stewardship role, overseeing the organization’s financial health and compliance. This is a part-time, hybrid, volunteer position based in the Greater Hamilton (Burlington) Metropolitan Area. Day-to-day responsibilities include reviewing financial statements, budgets, and cash flow reports; monitoring income and expenditures; and helping ensure that financial practices align with legal, regulatory, and policy requirements. The Treasurer collaborates with the Board Chair and Executive Director (or equivalent leadership) to prepare annual budgets, financial forecasts, and funding plans, and presents clear financial updates and recommendations at board and committee meetings. The role also supports fundraising and grant activities by providing financial insights, contributes to risk management and internal controls, and participates in strategic planning, board development, and community engagement on behalf of Donald Moore Canada.
Qualifications
- Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting, with the ability to interpret and explain financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
- Knowledge of accounting principles, internal controls, and compliance requirements for Canadian charities and non-profit organizations.
- Experience in board governance, including fiduciary responsibilities, policy oversight, and contribution to strategic planning and risk management.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with fellow board members, staff, volunteers, and community partners, demonstrating inclusive and respectful communication.
- Comfort with using digital tools for financial analysis, document sharing, and virtual collaboration (e.g., spreadsheets, accounting software, and online meeting platforms).
- Prior experience in a treasurer, finance, or accounting role (professional or volunteer) is strongly preferred; a CPA designation or equivalent experience is an asset.
- Commitment to the mission of Donald Moore Canada and to advancing equity and opportunity within the Black community, with cultural awareness and sensitivity.
- Capacity to meet full-time volunteer expectations, including regular board and committee meetings, periodic events, and time-sensitive financial reviews.
