Board of Directors – Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay Volunteer Opportunity Thunder Bay & District The Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay is seeking passionate, community‑minded individuals to join our Board of Directors and help strengthen dementia support across Northwestern Ontario. Dementia touches more families every year, and strong governance is essential to ensuring that people living with dementia and their care partners feel supported, understood, and connected. As we continue to grow, rebuild, and expand our reach—particularly into rural and remote communities—we are looking for individuals who bring diverse perspectives, professional expertise, and a shared commitment to improving dementia care. Who We’re Looking For We welcome applicants who bring a combination of the following knowledge, skills, or lived experience:
• Board governance
• Lived experience as a person living with dementia or care partner
• Representation from equity‑deserving groups (Indigenous, visible minority, 2SLGBTQI+)
• Rural or remote community representation
• Governance policy experience
• Fund development and fundraising
• Healthcare, finance, law, community engagement, or related expertise We are especially committed to building a Board that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve. This includes people with a lived experience of dementia, caregiving or advocacy. Key Responsibilities Board members contribute to strong governance and strategic leadership, including:
• Attending monthly 2‑hour board meetings (no meetings in July or August)
• Serving as ambassadors for the Society’s mission, vision, and values
• Participating in strategic planning and long‑term direction setting
• Supporting Accreditation planning from a governance perspective
• Engaging in policy development and good governance practices
• Providing financial oversight and compliance
• Identifying and mitigating organizational risks
• Supporting fund development and attending community events as needed
• Contributing to the Board’s annual work plan

Eligibility Applicants must:
• Be 18 years of age or older
• Be an individual (not a corporation)
• Not be bankrupt
• Not be found incapable under the Substitute Decisions Act, Mental Health Act, or by a court These requirements reflect the Ontario Not‑for‑Profit Corporations Act (ONCA). Time Commitment
• Monthly board meetings (2 hours)
• Annual Meeting in June
• Occasional participation in events, fundraising activities, or committee work
• Estimated total: 4–6 hours per month Why Join the Board? This is an opportunity to:
