Unpaid Volunteer Position
Board members are expected to commit to service for at least one 2-year term, with the option of remaining in their position for additional terms which is preferred. Although the amount of time Board Members spend monthly on non-operations, Board activities can vary widely, on average, a Board Member can be expected to spend 2-4 hours per month and must:
- Understand and demonstrate a commitment to the organization’s mission and programs
- Keep up to date with issues and trends that affect the organization
- Prepare for meetings by reading agendas, minutes, reports and other documentation required to actively participate in them
- Review financial statements
- Attend meetings regularly (no meetings typically in December, July and August)
- Contribute skills and knowledge by participating actively in meetings and committee work
- Understand and monitor the organization’s financial affairs
- Avoid any potential conflicts of interest and abide by agency by-laws
- Understand and maintain confidentiality
- Ensure the organization is complying with all legal and regulatory requirements.
