About the YMCA of Central East Ontario Board of Directors

YMCA Board Members serve as policy volunteers and act as stewards on behalf of the YMCA. Members serve 3 year terms. Board meetings occur 6-8 times per year. All Board Members will be required to join one of three Board Committees: Audit, Finance & Investment, Governance & Nominating, or Equity, Diversity and Social Inclusion.

Successful candidates must have a commitment to provide guidance, based on a policy governance model structure, to the CEO.

The Role of the YMCA of Central East Ontario Board Members

  • To ensure that the YMCA of Central East Ontario fulfills its responsibilities, operates effectively and acts in accordance with the principles of being ethical & accountable, collaborative, open & responsive, integrated & convergent, and proactive.
  • To set and monitor the strategic plan for the YMCA of Central East Ontario.
  • To foster the growth of the YMCA of Central East Ontario.
  • To Support the mission, vision, values, strategic plan, policies and goals of the YMCA of Central East Ontario.

Responsibilities of a YMCA of Central East Ontario Board Member

  • Attend meetings approximately every other month, on the fourth Wednesday evening of the month.
  • Prepare for and participate in board meetings.
  • Support substantive discussion and sound decision making to help the board fulfill its fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Be an Ambassador of the YMCA of Central East Ontario in the communities we serve.
  • To fully support the YMCA's philanthropic goals by contributing to annual, Capital, and /or endowment campaigns based on capacity to give, and to assist in acquiring other community donations.

Eligibility Criteria and Condition of Nomination

All candidates shall:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Not be employed by the YMCA of Central East Ontario.
  3. Respect, understand and be committed to the mission, vision and values of the YMCA.
  4. Be eligible for membership.

Strategic Priority

The YMCA of Central East Ontario is looking for Board Members who want to be involved in positioning the YMCA to be recognized as a strong charity committed to building a healthy community.

Desired Skills, Competencies and Expertise

The Governance and Nominating Committee is seeking Board nominees with one or more of the following skill sets:

  • Demonstrated experience working with, or lived experience within, equity-deserving communities, supported by examples that reflect a commitment to equity, diversity, and social inclusion.
  • Collaborative mindset - understanding or developing community partnerships.
  • Clear understanding of Governance vs. Management.
  • Geographic representation reflecting the communities that we serve.
  • Charitable/Not for Profit Governance experience.
  • Commitment to giving back to their community.
  • Fundraising and Philanthropy experience.

An Understanding of the Diversity of our Community and a Focus on Inclusivity

Connected to Communities and Networks: connected to people, organizations and opportunities that will advance the YMCA’s vision, mission and values (e.g. government, education, health, or corporate sectors).
