Join the Board of the John Howard Society of Toronto and help lead meaningful change for those impacted by the criminal justice system.

Our Mission John Howard Society of Toronto provides tools and supports to empower individuals involved in the criminal justice system to create meaningful change in their lives.

Our Organization The John Howard Society of Toronto (JHST) is a non-profit organization committed to providing and developing

programs that reduce the social, economic, and personal costs of crime. JHST supports individuals that have been in

conflict with the law or are at imminent risk of coming into conflict with the law through rehabilitation and reintegration services, education and community programs. JHST operates under a Policy Governance Model.

We are seeking enthusiastic and experienced volunteers to fulfil the following roles on the JHST Board of Directors:
• Board Director (currently three open positions), with experience in one or more of the following areas:

▪ Fundraising

▪ Real Estate, Construction, Developing Infrastructure ▪ Collective Bargaining and Labour Relations ▪ Talent Management ▪ Finance and Financial Literacy

▪ Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) ▪ People with Lived Experience (PWLE)

Your Commitments and responsibilities include:
• Serving in a volunteer capacity without renumeration;
• Committing to an initial three-year term;


• Understanding the role and responsibilities of a Board Director and become fully informed on organizational matters;


• Participating in the Board’s deliberations and decisions in matters of finance, policy, risk management,

strategic direction and advocacy;
• Evaluating and approving policy and other recommendations brought to the Board;


• Attending Board meetings regularly and prepared to engage in meaningful participation including, reviewing

all meeting materials in advance;


• Serving on at least one committee of the Board and/or assist with special projects as needed;
• Allocating an average of five hours per month to contribute to the Board and Committee(s); the Board meets

virtually 10 to 12 times per year, with ad hoc in-person meetings;


• Abiding by the By-laws, conflicts of interest, and policies that apply to the Board, and respecting the confidentiality of organizational information and Board and Management decisions;


• Being an ambassador for JHST and its mission, and act in its best interests;


• Being informed of, and meeting all, applicable legal and fiduciary responsibilities; and
• Participating in fundraising and special events.

Qualifications:


• Active, contributing, team player;
• A solution orientated mindset, creative thinking approach to issues and an inclusive perspective;
• Time and energy to prepare for and contribute to monthly Board and Committee meetings;


• Personal commitment to JHST’s vision and mission;


• Knowledge of, or interest in, the criminal justice system and helping those in conflict with the law; and
• Knowledge of Toronto’s diverse communities.
