About Cecil Community Centre

Cecil Community Centre is a not-for-profit, multi-service neighbourhood centre that has served Toronto residents for more than 40 years. We offer recreational, educational, social, cultural and capacity-building programs that strengthen community well-being and connection.

Programs and services include an EarlyON Family Resource Centre, community drop-in programming, seniors’ health and wellness classes, youth programs, CecilKids! children’s programs and community partnerships that provide English-language instruction, income tax clinics and other supports.

The Centre is an accessible, multi-functional City of Toronto facility governed by an independent Board of Management. It also serves as a gathering place for community meetings, forums, workshops, courses, performances, tournaments and special events.

About the Board of Management

The Board of Management consists of 11 elected volunteer Board Members and the City Councillor for Ward 11. The Board provides governance, strategic oversight, policy direction and financial stewardship while supporting the Centre’s responsiveness to evolving community needs.

  • Up to five Board Members may live outside the Centre’s catchment area.
  • At least six Board Members, representing the majority of the Board, must live within the catchment area: Bloor Street West to Queen Street West, and Bathurst Street to University Avenue.

Current Opportunity

The Board is seeking qualified applicants to fill vacant Board Member positions for two years term. We welcome individuals who bring diverse perspectives, relevant expertise and a genuine commitment to strengthening the community.

Who We Are Looking For

We are particularly interested in candidates who live within the Centre’s catchment area and bring experience in one or more of the following areas:

âś“ Human Resources and Labour Relations âś“ Risk Management âś“ Finance and Accounting âś“ Marketing and Communications âś“ Fundraising and Resource Development âś“ Community Engagement âś“ Legal or Not-for-Profit Law âś“ Government Relations âś“ Governance and Board Experience âś“ Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility âś“ Strategic Planning âś“ Executive Leadership in the Non-Profit Sector

Previous board experience is an asset but is not required. Candidates who are eager to contribute, learn and grow in not-for-profit governance are encouraged to apply.

Board Member Expectations and Time Commitment

  • Approximately 4 to 8 hours per month, including preparation and committee work
  • Attendance at approximately 9 Board meetings each year
  • Participation on at least one Board committee, such as Finance, Governance or Fundraising
  • Attendance at the Annual General Meeting and occasional special meetings or strategic planning sessions
  • Advance review of meeting materials and active, constructive participation in discussions and decisions

Meetings generally take place in the College/Spadina and Kensington Market neighbourhoods of Toronto.

Eligibility Requirements

Candidates must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a resident of the City of Toronto
  • Not be in a restricted category as defined in the City of Toronto Public Appointments Policy

Prior to appointment, successful candidates will also be required to:

  • Become a member of Cecil Community Centre
  • Sign a conflict-of-interest disclosure and a commitment to fulfil the responsibilities of the role
  • Submit a current rĂ©sumĂ© or curriculum vitae
  • Provide a short biography and professional headshot for publication on the Centre’s website
