What does an inclusive community look like?

It looks like living independently with confidence. It looks like meaningful employment and a first paycheque. It looks like welcoming spaces and a feeling of true belonging. It looks like families feeling supported, connected, and hopeful about the future.

At Community Living Hamilton, we help make these outcomes possible for more than 1,200 children, youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities each year. Behind that impact is a volunteer Board of Directors committed to strong governance, strategic leadership, and community advocacy.

We are seeking a new board member to help guide this work — and shape a more inclusive Hamilton for years to come.

About Community Living Hamilton

With 250 employees, CLH is the region’s largest service provider for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities such as Down Syndrome and Autism. We empower the people we support to build meaningful lives with choice, dignity, and connection to their community. Whether it’s living independently or in a group setting, working in competitive employment, learning in an inclusive environment or sharing in community activities, we help people thrive, belong, and reach their full potential.

The Role of the Board

The Board of Directors provides governance and strategic oversight of the organization. Board members are not involved in day-to-day operations, but ensure that the organization:

  • Operates responsibly and sustainably
  • Protects its assets and stakeholders
  • Remains aligned with its mission and strategic direction
  • The assurance of Agency Ends and the Executive Director performance.
  • Advocates for policies and systems that enhance the lives of people supported

Board members serve as a vital link between CLH and the broader community.

What You’ll Gain

Serving on the CLH Board offers the opportunity to:

  • Contribute to meaningful change in the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities
  • Apply your expertise within a mission-driven, community-based organization
  • Provide strategic governance and oversight of a complex, multi-service agency
  • Expand your leadership and governance experience
  • Build relationships with respected community leaders and advocates

Most importantly, you will help shape a more inclusive Hamilton — one where everyone has the opportunity to build a great life.

Responsibilities

Board members are expected to:

  • Demonstrate commitment to CLH’s mission and values
  • Prepare for and attend monthly meetings (Evenings on the 4th Tuesday of each month)
  • Participate actively in discussions and committee work
  • Understand and oversee financial and organizational performance
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance
  • Maintain confidentiality and avoid conflicts of interest

Desired Skills & Experience

As part of our board succession planning and commitment to diverse perspectives and expertise, we welcome candidates with experience in any of the following areas. While prior board experience is an asset, it is not required. We are committed to board development and mentorship and will support candidates with relevant professional expertise and a strong commitment to our mission in building their governance skills.

  • Governance
  • Law/Compliance
  • Human Resources
