ABOUT THE BLACK HEALTH ALLIANCE

The Black Health Alliance (BHA) is a community-led registered charity working to improve the health and well-being of Black communities in Canada. We centre Black communities in defining the barriers and challenges affecting our health and well-being. We provide a platform for Black people to establish a common voice around systemic problems and we work to mobilize the tools, skills and resources needed to co-design and implement solutions that improve health outcomes.

OPPORTUNITY

Black Health Alliance is seeking 8 dynamic, enthusiastic and dedicated community members to serve on its volunteer Board of Directors, helping to guide the next stage of the organization’s growth.

As a growing national organization, we are committed to building a Board that reflects the rich geographic, linguistic, cultural, sexual, and gender diversity of Black communities across Canada.

We especially encourage applications from individuals who identify as Francophone, youth, seniors and older adults, multi-generational Black Canadian, Afro-Indigenous, Afro-Latinx, Afro-Caribbean, and African-born individuals Black LGBTQ2S+, Black newcomers and immigrants, Black people living with disabilities, and those from diverse faith backgrounds.

PRIORITY SKILLS SETS & AREAS OF EXPERTISE

We are prioritizing the desired skill sets and/or expertise in the following areas:

  • Legal
  • Fundraising
  • Government Relations
  • Human Resources
  • Public Relations & Marketing
  • Finance & Accounting (CPA)
  • Organizational & Change Management
  • Data Governance
  • Board Governance
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Social Determinants of Health, Health Equity. Anti-Black Racism, and health care.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

In addition to demonstrating core competencies in one or more of the above areas, candidates should demonstrate and/or be:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Commitment to the Mission, Vision, Values of the Black Health Alliance
  • An understanding of effective Board governance
  • An understanding of anti-Black racism rooted in lived experience
  • A keen interest in and demonstrated commitment to community development
  • An ability to commit 10-15 hours monthly to carry out the general duties of Directors as detailed in the position description.

COMMITMENT OVERVIEW

  • 2-year Board team
  • 6-8 Board Meetings a year (meetings are held virtually)
  • Serving on one or more committees

The Board of Directors is the legal governing body of the Corporation and is responsible for determining and executing the mission of the organization and its strategic direction. Each Board member has a fiduciary duty of care and loyalty to the organization, and collectively the Board is responsible for the effective stewardship and governance of the Black Health Alliance.

NOTE:

The role of a Board Director is focused on governance, deeply engaged in shaping the strategic direction, oversight, and stewardship of the Corporation. Our talented staff team is focused on the day-to-day operations of the organization.
