Board of Directors

The Coast Foundation Society (1974) is seeking passionate, community-minded leaders to join its volunteer Board of Directors.

For more than 50 years, Coast Mental Health has supported people living with mental illness through recovery-focused programs, housing, employment services, and community-based support across British Columbia. Guided by compassion, inclusion, and innovation, Coast works to improve the lives of individuals and strengthen healthier communities.

As the organization continues to evolve and expand its impact, Coast Mental Health is seeking volunteer Board Directors who can contribute strategic leadership, governance expertise, and a strong commitment to mental health and community service.

Board Director Responsibilities

Board Directors provide governance oversight and strategic guidance to support the organization’s mission and long-term sustainability. Responsibilities include:

  • Attending regular Board and committee meetings
  • Contributing to strategic planning and organizational oversight
  • Supporting fiduciary and governance responsibilities
  • Acting as an ambassador for Coast Mental Health within the community
  • Participating actively in Board discussions and decision-making

Commitment to Equity and Diversity

Coast Mental Health is committed to strengthening representation from equity-deserving groups currently underrepresented on the Board, including:

  • Women
  • Indigenous Peoples
  • Racialized individuals reflective of the communities Coast serves
  • People with lived experience

Building a diverse and inclusive Board is a key governance priority that supports stronger decision-making, deeper community connection, and enhanced organizational accountability.

Desired Experience and Leadership Priorities

Candidates should demonstrate:

  • Experience operating in complex environments involving multiple funders, significant public accountability, and large-scale initiatives, including fund development and capital projects
  • Experience across housing, health, or social service systems — particularly mental health and substance use health
  • Expertise in governance, finance, risk management, legal disciplines, or organizational transformation to support the organization during a period of continued growth and change

Leadership and Succession

Priority will be given to candidates with:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience and the ability to contribute effectively at a senior governance level.
  • Interest and capacity to assume future committee leadership roles in support of Board succession planning and continuity.

Who We Are Looking For

We welcome applications from individuals with diverse lived experiences, professional backgrounds, and perspectives. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Governance and Board leadership.
  • Mental health, healthcare, or social services.
  • Indigenous relations and community engagement.
  • Finance, accounting, or auditing.
  • Legal or regulatory compliance.
  • Human resources and organizational development.
  • Government relations or public policy.
  • Communications, marketing, or fundraising.
  • Risk management or strategic planning.

Previous non-profit Board experience is considered an asset.
