Help Lead the Future of Indigenous Housing and Land Development in BC

We are currently looking for visionary, committed Indigenous leaders to join the governance Board of either BC Indigenous Housing Society (BCIHS) and/or the BC Indigenous Land Development Society (BCILDS). As a Board member, you will help guide the direction of a growing organization working to ensure that housing, land use, and development in British Columbia are shaped by Indigenous voices and priorities.

This is more than a seat at the table — it’s a chance to build the table.

Who We Are

BCIHS and BCILDS are both registered charities and non-profits societies that gratefully operate on the shared unceded, ancestral and traditional territories of the Coast Salish Peoples.

BC Indigenous Housing Society (BCIHS) is dedicated to providing safe, attainable housing for Indigenous individuals and families in Vancouver and throughout British Columbia. We are governed by an all‑Indigenous Board of Directors and currently manage a portfolio of 21 buildings with over 900 units, serving more than 1,300 Indigenous persons and families.

BC Indigenous Land Development Society (BCILDS) is focused on real estate and community infrastructure development. We support Indigenous communities by providing expertise in feasibility analysis, procurement, governance, and capital asset management. We deliver and manage over 1,800 housing units in the Lower Mainland in partnership with governments and community stakeholders.

Together, our two societies work to honour the land, build for the future, and ensure development and housing initiatives are guided by Indigenous philosophy, values, and practices.

Why Join our Boards?

  • To contribute to meaningful, systemic change in housing and land development that directly benefits Indigenous communities.
  • To help shape and provide oversight for organizations grounded in Indigenous culture, the 7 Laws (Health, Happiness, Humbleness, Generations, Generosity, Forgiveness, Understanding), as well as best practices in governance, financial stewardship, and community engagement.
  • To work with a dynamic leadership team and other Board members committed to reconciliation, decolonization, and Indigenous self‑determination.
  • To help ensure that Indigenous voices and values are central in real estate development, housing policy, and capital asset management.

We are seeking 6 to 8 new Board members to join the governance Boards of BCIHS and/or BCILDS. Responsibilities will include:

  • Providing strategic oversight, direction, and governance to ensure that the societies fulfill their missions, vision, and legal/regulatory obligations.
  • Participating in quarterly Board meetings, committees, and other governance functions.
  • Reviewing and guiding policies, financial management, risk oversight, project approvals, and performance evaluation.
  • Ensuring that Indigenous culture, values, and perspectives are respected, integrated, and upheld in all programs, services, projects, and land development initiatives.
  • Supporting relationships with Indigenous communities, government partners, funders, and other stakeholders.

Our Board is supported by a dedicated Board Liaison who helps coordinate meetings, manage communications, and ensure you have the tools and information needed to participate effectively.

Time commitment: 8 hours on average per quarter for a minimum 2-year term, which includes regular quarterly Board meetings, participation in at least one committee, Annual General Meeting, training and seasonal events.

Your Expertise That is Needed

Each of our Boards plays a distinct but complementary role in advancing Indigenous-led housing and development across British Columbia. While there are shared values and governance principles, each Board also requires specific areas of expertise based on their organizational focus.

We welcome applicants to indicate which Board(s) they are most interested in joining — BCIHS, BCILDS, or both.
