Founded in 1982 and the largest emergency housing provider in York Region, Blue Door is a
registered charity that offers more than 10 innovative and collaborative housing, employment,
and health programs aimed at addressing the root causes of homelessness.

Job Summary
Board Members at Blue Door are passionate community leaders who provide strategic
oversight, governance, and advocacy to advance the organization’s mission of preventing and
ending homelessness. They contribute their expertise to support innovative, equity-focused
solutions in housing, health, and employment, and serve as ambassadors for Blue Door’s vision
of safe, stable, and supportive communities for all.
The Board of Directors Responsibilities:
• Determining the mission and purpose of the organization
• Overseeing the selection and performance of the CEO.
• Ensuring the strategic planning process is thorough and complete, as well as the oversight
of its implementation by Management.
• Ensuring strong fiduciary oversight, risk mitigation, financial management and growth
strategies.
• Enhancing Blue Door’s public image.
• Assessing the Boards own performance as the governing body of Blue Door.
• Serve as an active advocate and ambassador for the organization and fully engage in
identifying and securing financial resources and partnerships necessary for Blue Door to advance its mission.
• Providing a personal financial donation annually that is within the individual Director’s
means.
• Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in person at board meetings.
• Participate fully in one or more committees.
Time Commitment
• Attend regular board meetings (approximately 11 per year) in-person. The Board typically
meets on Tuesday evenings, 6:30-8:30 pm. Board meetings are held in person at Blue
Door’s Construct Training Centre (212 Earl Stewart Dr., Aurora, ON L4G 6V7). While some committee meetings may be virtual, Board members are expected to attend regular on-site meetings throughout the year. Please note that we are currently seeking individuals based in the Greater Toronto Area or those able to reliably attend in-person meetings.
• Participate in a minimum of one Board Committee, meeting approximately 8 times
annually.
• One Years' notice of meetings is provided to the Board of Directors.
• Board members must commit to a three (3) year term renewable maximum of up to two
times.
• One Annual Board retreat, generally this is a Saturday in the month of May. This meeting is
in person and may not have a virtual option available.
• Optional and appreciated participation in volunteer, donor and public events

• A deep sense of purpose in Blue Door’s mission
• Lived and living experience with poverty, homelessness, housing-insecure related issues is
deeply appreciated.

• Attend internal staff meetings and staff training as required.
• Maintain the confidentiality of all client and agency information.
• Utilizes effective conflict resolution skills in accordance with (Crisis Prevention Intervention
(CPI) training.
• Fosters positive and appropriate relationships with clients, colleagues, community partners
and volunteers.
• Provides referrals and follow-up as necessary.
• Meets with manager on a regular basis and participates in completion of annual
performance evaluation. Occupational Health & Safety
• All employees are responsible for carrying out work in a way that does not adversely affect
their own health and safety and that of others.
• All employees shall learn and understand health and safety policies and procedures and will
comply with them.
