Call for Candidates

The Board Development Committee of Osteoporosis Canada is responsible for recommending candidates to the Members of Osteoporosis Canada to serve as Directors on the Board of Osteoporosis Canada for a term of three years. There are several factors that are taken into consideration to ensure that geography, diversity and targeted expertise and experiences are considered with filling Board vacancies.

The Committee is pleased to call for nominations to the Board of Directors of Osteoporosis Canada for the three-year term beginning on September 19, 2026.

Process

  • Inviting expressions of interest from all qualified individuals
  • Inviting referrals from the Board, the Scientific Advisory Council, COPN, volunteers, and staff.

The Board Development Committee will review candidates who:

  • Are in possession of the desired identified skills and experience (see next page).
  • Reside in the geographic regions lacking sufficient representation on the Board. We encourage nominees from various provinces, territories and diverse communities.
  • All qualified nominees will be contacted, and a formal interview will occur in May 2026. All individuals will be informed about the outcome of the selection process. Candidates who have been nominated but not selected may be considered for other volunteer opportunities within Osteoporosis Canada.

Desired Skills and Experiences

The Board Development Committee is seeking volunteers to fill several vacancies that will be occurring this year. Nominees should have leadership experience, demonstrate excellence in their own field of expertise, and be willing to help to govern Osteoporosis Canada with care and vision.

After evaluating the strengths of the existing Board of Directors, the Board Development Committee is seeking individuals with skills that include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Previous Governance Board Experience
  • Expertise in Finance, Accounting, Governance and Risk Management
  • Expertise in Human Resource Management, and Volunteer Development
  • Expertise in advocacy, and governmental relationships
  • Expertise in information technology
  • Bilingualism would be an asset
  • Individuals who bring diverse lived and regional experience across Canada

Other Considerations:

Time commitment—The Board meets 3x per year, in January, June and September. Most meetings are conducted virtually via Zoom. Each member is expected to join a sub-committee of the Board (Finance, Governance, or Board Development) which meet every few months virtually via Zoom.

Travel: Candidates should aim to attend the AGM/Board of Directors meeting in Toronto in September, however, those residing outside the GTA may attend virtually.

Criteria for reviewing expressions of interest:

In addition to the specific expertise described above, the following criteria will be considered when reviewing expressions of interest of prospective Board members:

  • Support Osteoporosis Canada’s Vision, Mission and Values
  • Ability to think ‘big picture’ and long term
  • Desire to learn and grow
  • Prepared to make a substantial contribution in time and energy
  • Willingness to support the fundraising activities of the Board
  • Act as ambassadors within the community
  • Provide strategic guidance and oversight
