The Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS) is an independent, no-kill animal shelter in Toronto, Ontario, dedicated to finding permanent homes for dogs and cats. Operated entirely by volunteers, including a volunteer board of directors, EHS is funded solely through donations and fundraising efforts. It is not affiliated with the OSPCA, Toronto Humane Society, or City of Toronto Animal Services, and has no paid employees. EHS ensures that no animals are euthanized due to space or adoptability.

EHS is seeking a Volunteer (non-paid) Board Director at Large

Lead with Expertise. Strengthen Governance. Champion Animal Welfare.

Are you ready to bring your professional knowledge to a mission-driven organization that’s powered entirely by volunteers and fueled by compassion? The Etobicoke Humane Society (EHS) is searching for committed, strategic thinkers to join our Board of Directors as a Director at Large.

As a Director, you will play a vital role in helping guide EHS through a pivotal time in its evolution. This is your opportunity to make a meaningful difference, not just for animals in need, but for the organization, as we refine our governance model and strengthen our community impact.

The Opportunity

As a Director at Large, you will serve on a volunteer governance board actively shaping the future of a respected and growing animal welfare organization. You’ll bring your professional expertise to board-level decision-making, help steward the long-term vision of EHS, and support a culture of accountability, collaboration, and strategic growth.

We seek candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas: Human Resources, Finance, IT, Marketing, Development, Public Relations, Animal Welfare, Operations, and Nonprofit Management to ensure we have a well-rounded, knowledgeable Board.

Directors are expected to actively engage in committee work, strategic discussions, and policy development that support EHS's long-term goals. Your voice and experience will help us navigate a complex nonprofit landscape while ensuring that animals in our care continue to receive the highest standard of compassion and advocacy.

Who Is the Ideal Candidate?

We are looking for thoughtful, experienced leader ready to contribute time, knowledge, and integrity to a dynamic nonprofit Board. The ideal candidate has at least 5 years of professional experience in a relevant discipline and an understanding of governance, strategy, or organizational development.

You are dependable, collaborative, and proactive, someone who sees challenges as opportunities and understands the importance of shared leadership. Experience on a nonprofit Board or with committee work is a strong asset, but above all, you should be committed to animal welfare and the mission and values of EHS.

The Fine Print

This two-year volunteer term requires approximately 10–15 hours per month, including monthly Board meetings, committee participation, and preparation time.

What’s in It for You?

By joining the EHS Board, you’ll be part of a community passionate about protecting and rehoming animals and equally passionate about building a strong, sustainable organization to support that mission.

This is your chance to contribute to strategic initiatives, expand your nonprofit governance experience, and work alongside dedicated, like-minded professionals. You’ll also be satisfied knowing that your skills help animals in need and strengthen the systems that support their care.
