About Friends of Canadian Media
Friends of Canadian Media is an independent, non-partisan citizens' movement that champions Canadian voices in Canadian media. We advocate for a strong Canadian media ecosystem and for the role that public broadcasting, journalism, culture and Canadian storytelling play in our democracy and national identity.
Friends is entering an important next chapter. With a renewed Board and a three-year strategic direction, we are strengthening the organizational and financial foundations needed to support our mission for the future.
The opportunity
Friends is seeking an experienced financial leader to join its Board of Directors and Finance & Audit Committee at an important point in the organization's evolution.
As a Director, you will contribute to the full range of matters that come before the Board, including strategy, organizational performance, risk, governance and long-term sustainability. Your financial expertise will bring an important perspective as Friends strengthens its financial foundation and aligns its resources with its strategic priorities.
As a member of the Finance & Audit Committee, you will help provide oversight of financial performance, budgeting and forecasting, audit, internal controls, risk and financial sustainability. You will also help ensure that complex financial information is translated into clear insights that support sound Board decision-making.
What you will contribute
• Participate actively in Board discussions and decisions on strategy, organizational performance, risk and long- term sustainability.
• Bring an independent financial perspective to strategic decisions and help the Board understand the financial implications of the choices before it.
• Serve as an active member of the Finance & Audit Committee.
• Review and constructively challenge annual budgets, forecasts, financial statements and material variances.
• Contribute to oversight of audit, financial controls, financial risk and material financial commitments.
• Help the Board assess whether financial resources and organizational capacity are appropriately aligned with
Friends' strategic priorities.
• Support thoughtful discussion of revenue sustainability, cost structure, financial resilience and resource
allocation.
• Help translate complex financial information into clear, decision-useful insights for fellow Directors.
• Work collaboratively with the Board Chair, committee colleagues, Executive Director and fellow Directors.
• Contribute to a Board culture of thoughtful challenge, sound judgement, transparency and collective
accountability.
• Act as an ambassador for Friends and its mission.

A Director first, a financial expert always
We are looking for someone whose financial expertise strengthens the Board while also bringing curiosity and judgement to the broader work of Friends. Every Director contributes to the full range of issues before the Board. The successful candidate will be comfortable moving between financial stewardship and wider conversations about strategy, governance, organizational effectiveness, public policy and the future of Canadian media.
As the Board continues to evolve, there may also be an opportunity over time to assume greater leadership within the Finance & Audit Committee.
Board commitment
• An initial three-year term, renewable in accordance with Friends' governance requirements.
• Active participation in quarterly Board meetings, including in-person meetings where scheduled.
• Preparation for meetings through review of Board materials and thoughtful participation in discussion and
decision-making.
• Service on the Finance & Audit Committee and participation in other Board work as required.
• Participation in Board orientation, development and periodic strategy and governance discussions.
• Commitment to the fiduciary duties, confidentiality, independence and standards of conduct expected of a
Director.
This is a volunteer Board position. Reasonable expenses associated with Board service are reimbursed, and Directors & Officers insurance is provided.
