BACKGROUND

In Peel Region, 1 in 5 students attending school face barriers related to poverty that prevent them from fully participating in school. Many students come to school hungry because there is no food at home. Others lack necessities like winter clothing or school supplies. Students also face difficult challenges in the home environment where a parent or guardian has lost a job or there is an emergency that requires a compassionate response.

Founded in 2019, the Peel Learning Foundation (PLF) works to remove these barriers and ensure all students have equitable opportunities to succeed in their education. Each year, an increasing number of Peel District School Board students rely on PLF during times of need.

Our goal is to raise funds to level the playing field and help students do and achieve more.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Peel Learning Foundation is seeking dedicated and community-minded individuals to serve as Volunteer Board Members.

Board Members play a vital governance role in stewarding the organization’s mission, ensuring accountability, and supporting the long-term sustainability and impact of the Foundation. Directors are expected to act in the best interests of the organization and to exercise the care, diligence, and skill that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in comparable circumstances.

  • Oversee financial stewardship and risk management, ensuring appropriate controls and accountability measures are in place
  • Support, evaluate, and provide guidance to the Executive Director

Board Engagement & Leadership

  • Attend and actively participate in Board meetings
  • Review meeting materials in advance and contribute informed, constructive input
  • Serve on at least one Board committee and support its work
  • Participate in Board development activities, including orientation and ongoing governance training

Ambassador & Community Engagement:

  • Make an annual personal financial contribution at a level that is meaningful and appropriate
  • Act as an ambassador for PLF, promoting its mission, programs, and impact within the community
  • Support and participate in fundraising initiatives, events, and donor engagement activities
  • Leverage personal and professional networks to advance PLF’s mission and expand its reach
