BOARD OF DIRECTORS OPPORTUNITY

Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities (SCHC)

Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities (SCHC) is one of the most established and

comprehensive community health organizations in Ontario. With over 300 staff, 200 volunteers,

and more than 40 integrated programs delivered across 11 sites, SCHC is committed to improving

the health and well-being of the diverse communities of Scarborough.

Our vision is to ignite the strength of community. Guided by our mission to provide accessible,

equitable and transformational health and social service choices, for the well-being of diverse

communities, SCHC delivers a broad continuum of care—from primary care and chronic disease

management to mental health, community development, and social supports.

As an Accredited and Academic Community Health Centre, SCHC is advancing innovation,

knowledge development, and system transformation. We play a leadership role within the

evolving health system, contributing to integrated care models, primary care advancement, and

population health strategies across Scarborough.

The Opportunity

SCHC is seeking committed and community-minded individuals to join its skills-based Board of

Directors. The Board is a high-performing governance body responsible for providing strategic

oversight, ensuring organizational accountability, and stewarding SCHC’s long-term impact within

a complex and evolving health and community system.

Board members contribute to shaping the organization’s strategic direction, overseeing risk and

financial stewardship, and ensuring alignment with SCHC’s mission, vision, values, and strategic

priorities—including a strong and ongoing commitment to Action on Equity.

This is an opportunity to contribute to an organization at the forefront of community health, system

integration, and innovation.

Board Responsibilities

Board members are expected to:

• Provide strategic governance and oversight, ensuring alignment with SCHC’s mission,

vision, and strategic priorities

• Uphold fiduciary responsibilities, including financial stewardship and risk oversight

• Support and advance SCHC’s commitment to health equity through governance and

decision-making

• Contribute to Board effectiveness and governance excellence, including continuous

improvement and accountability

• Bring a systems-thinking perspective, supporting SCHC’s role in broader health system

transformation and partnerships

• Act as ambassadors for SCHC within the community and across the health and social

care sector

Skills and Experience

We are seeking individuals with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

• Digital Health

• Governance and Board leadership

• Human Resources

• Health system transformation and integration

• Primary care and population health

• Equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging (EDI&B) leadership

• Financial oversight and risk management

• Innovation or social enterprise

• Research, evaluation, and academic partnerships

• Advocacy, community engagement, and/or fund development

Qualifications and Attributes

The ideal candidates will demonstrate:

• A strong commitment to SCHC’s mission and the communities we serve

• Demonstrated commitment to advancing health equity, anti-racism, and anti-oppression,

with the ability to apply an equity lens in governance and decision-making

• Strategic thinking and the ability to contribute to high-level organizational oversight

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage constructively

and collaboratively

• Integrity, sound judgment, and a commitment to ethical leadership

• A willingness to provide thoughtful challenge and contribute to informed decision-making

Commitment

Board members are expected to:

• Attend monthly in-person Board meetings (approximately 3 hours per month)

• Participate in one or more Board Committees (approximately 2 hours every other month)

• Review meeting materials and prepare in advance (approximately 3 hours per month)

• Commit to a three (3) year term
