If this is you, the Kelowna Visual & Performing Arts Society (KVPACS) Board of Directors has an opportunity to combine your passions into one volunteer role. We are seeking experienced professionals to join our Board at the upcoming Annual General Meeting.

Background

The RCA is the visual and performing arts centre in Kelowna’s Cultural District. It is governed by the KVPACS, a non-profit organization with a 12-member Board of Directors.

The KVPACS works to improve the cultural and social quality of life in Kelowna through the arts. The Board has a broad range of experience, skills and knowledge. Consider bringing your skills set to the Board and supporting the arts.

The Board needs Directors with experience in: Visual and Performing Arts (performing and/or administration); Public Relations; Financial Management; Facility Management; Community Building; Marketing Communications; Human Resource Management; Legal Affairs; and, Fundraising.

Experience in the following areas is an asset:

  • Have attended events, performances and/or programs at the RCA
  • Have demonstrated an interest in the arts
  • Have familiarity with non-profit Board governance
  • Have familiarity with financial oversight
  • Have previous Board experience
  • Have familiarity with the BC Societies Act

Board Positions Available - One Year Term: November 2025 to November 2026 

Commitment

  • Fulfill a 1-year term (subject to renewal to a 6 year term maximum)
  • Attend 7 Board meetings per year (last Tuesday of each month at 5pm, excluding February, April, July, August, December)
  • Attend one AGM per year in the Fall
  • Attend one half/full day annual Board retreat or planning session per year
  • Participate on at least one Board Committee per year, preferably two
  • Assume leadership roles, during your tenure on the Board, as a Committee chair and/or on the Executive
  • Participate in Board governance training
  • Represent the Board at community and municipal meetings and events

Board Eligibility

  • Nominees must be a member of the RCA at the time of application

  • The KVPACS encourages nominations from all members of the community including members of the Indigenous, 2SLGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities
  • As required by the BC Societies Act, applicants must be at least 18 years of age, Canadannot be an undischarged bankrupt, or been convicted of an offence involving fraud.

Board Responsibility

The Board hires an Executive Director (ED) who oversees programming and services offered at the RCA. The ED also administers the Master Lease of the RCA from the City, and Sub-Leases of RCA space to tenants.

While the KVPACS Board is responsible for the strategic direction and financial oversight of the RCA, the Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the facility.

The KVPACS is a Governance Board so interactions are limited to providing strategic advice and direction to the Executive Director. There is no day-to-day involvement with the staff and operations.

Relationship with the City of Kelowna

The Board recognizes the importance of working in partnership with the City to benefit the community. The City owns the RCA building and leases it to the KVPACS for $1.00 per year. The City also provides an annual grant, roughly 30% of the $ 1 million operating budget.

Board Composition

The Board has Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) goals in place. It strives for a 50:50 gender balance, a range of ages across four age bands (25-40, 41-55, 56-70, +70 years), and a minimum 20:80 visible/non-visible minority balance.

Committee Structure

There are five (5) Board Committees which are:

  • Governance
  • Human Resources
  • Nomination
  • Strategic Planning
  • Finance/Financial Sustainability

Directors must sit on at least one Committee but are encouraged to sit on two Committees. The time commitment for each Committee varies but is usually a minimum of one meeting per month, with additional work as required.

Director Commitments

Directors are expected to:

  • Be prepared for and regularly attend Board and related meetings
  • Make a serious commitment to participate actively in Committee work
  • Provide leadership by serving as a Committee Chair and on the Executive Committee, one or more times, while serving as a Director
  • Stay informed about Committee matters, prepare well for meetings, and review and comment on Minutes and Reports
  • Get to know other Board members and build a collegial working relationship that contributes to consensus
  • Be an active participant in the Board's annual evaluation/planning efforts
  • Attend events and productions at the RCA
  • Attend City Council meetings and City events to represent the Board
  • Be professional when representing the Board in the community

BC Liquor License Required Documents

The RCA has a BC Liquor License. As a result, Directors must complete a Criminal Records Check and a Personal History Summary for a Liquor Licence Application upon joining the Board.

Mentorship & Orientation

New Board members are mentored by a current Director and provided robust on-boarding materials, training and a facility tour.

Nomination Process

The Nominations Committee will review the applications received and recommend to the Board, the nominees to put forward at the AGM to join the Board.

All applicants will be advised of the Nominations Committee’s decision by October 10, 2025.

Election Process

Voting takes place during the KVPACS Annual General Meeting (AGM) on November 12, 2025. Nominees attend the AGM.

Successful applicants will be publicly announced on the RCA web site within a few days of the AGM.
