General Volunteer Role Descriptions

*All volunteers will have a leader who will communicate any information applicable to their position and answer any questions they may have*

Race Operations Volunteer Positions

Route Signage

You will be responsible for assisting with the set up and tear down of the directional signage and KM markers for our race route. Volunteers will be given direction by the Course Signage Lead on the signage plan for both Saturday and Sunday races.

Note: Saturday & Sunday

Start/Finish Line Marshals

Volunteer marshals at the Start/Finish Line will work with the Red Zone Lead who will lead the way! You will ensure that participants are lining up in the proper place before the race starts; you may be asked to hold signs to help with this task.

Once the race starts, you will then assist with the Finish Line, congratulating participants and guiding them through the Finish area. This is a position you’ll surely enjoy as you get to see the two most exciting parts of the race! Note: Saturday & Sunday

Medal Presenters

A very exciting area to be—the finish line! You will work with a group of volunteers to set up our medal racks and fill them with Finished'er medals for ease of access. You’ll get to practice teamwork, enthusiasm, and awareness.

You may also be involved in handing out medals to finishers, directing post-race participant traffic to The Emera Oval (it gets very crowded after races!), and of course congratulating everyone! Post-race volunteers will assist with take down/clean up of the area.

Water Station

Help keep our participants hydrated on course! This is an ideal position for a group or organization as you will work with a group of volunteers to set up tables and fill them with cups of water for ease of access. You may also be involved in handing out hydration to our participants as they pass by the hydration station. Once the race(s) have passed, you’ll pack up the supplies, sort the garbage and return the supplies to the storage bin.

Course Marshals

These volunteers play a key role in keeping our participants headed in the right direction during the races. You will be assigned a location on course, and you will direct participants based on your course marshal instructions. An exciting role where you get to cheer participants on!

Bike Marshal

EXPERIENCED CYCLISTS NEEDED! We are looking for cyclists with a passion for helping our participants! A very exciting role where you will lead the race and paces within the race. You will need to be familiar with the course and help guide our participants to the finish line. Cyclists will need to have their own bike or be able to borrow one.

Burn Rubber Crew

EXPERIENCED RUNNERS NEEDED! We are looking for runners with a passion for helping other runners! You’ll need to be a hard worker, enthusiastic, and ready to mentally push others!

The Burn Rubber Crew will help participants attain their goals by pacing with them through the challenging areas of the event. They will be strategically placed on the route where runners may need that extra boost, on North Street in Halifax. Giv’er Crew knows how to Giv’er, when the going gets tough!

Note: Sunday only

Pace Volunteers

EXPERIENCED RUNNERS NEEDED! You will focus on keeping a consistent pace and supporting participants throughout the race to the finish line while giving them a boost of motivation along the way. A pace lead will set the pace so participants can shut their brain off and stick with the pacer.

Are you an experienced enthusiastic runner with a passion for motivating others to achieve their goals? This is the role for you!

Celebration Zone Volunteer Positions- Emera Oval

Celebration Set up & Signage Team

This role is very important as these volunteers make magic happen! This team helps to set up the celebration zone, distribute supplies and assist with installing signage in the race zone.

Along with having a lot of fun you’ll improve your teamwork and event execution skills. Be ready to do some moderate lifting and wear something comfy on your feet.

Celebration Start & Finish Signage

Volunteers at the Start/Finish line will work with the staff onsite to assist with installing signage in the race zone.

Along with having a lot of fun you’ll improve your teamwork and event execution skills. Be ready to do some moderate lifting and wear something comfy on your feet.

Bag Check

On race day, bag check volunteers will organize, collect, and store participant backpacks and other items during the race. The process will be as follows: you will make sure the bags are marked with the participant bib number.

Upon pick up, participants will present their bib number to retrieve their items. This role requires a moderate amount of time standing up so be sure to wear comfy shoes! You’ll need to be ready to be organized, work as a team, and pay attention to details!

Awards

Volunteers will set up the awards, so they are easy to identify by distance/placement/etc., and hand out the awards once people finish their race.

You must also keep track of what awards are picked up and ones that are not. Working here will require you to be positive and organized! New for this year: Age category awards will not be distributed on race weekend. Participants will be notified a few weeks after the event.

Information Booth

You are key representatives of the Emera Blue Nose Marathon. You act as a host welcoming anyone attending the events of the Blue Nose weekend and are located at the Information Booth at the Emera Oval or at the Zatzman Sportsplex.

You must be ready to answer any inquiry ranging from event start times, to parking options, to the location of the bag storage area. Having a good working knowledge of the event is a definite advantage for anyone filling this role. This job will test your communication skills, and attention to detail!

Nutrition Station

Join in the fun and help the participants replenish and celebrate their success. This job will involve setting up the post-race food centre, restocking the food and beverage area after each run, and helping with site management.

This role will test your work speed, teamwork, and attentiveness! Be a part of the post-race action! This role involves congratulating and socializing with participants and helping with the set up and tear down of the area as required. Be ready to do some moderate lifting and wear something comfy on your feet.

Volunteer Tent

In this position, you will assist with helping volunteers, providing volunteer shirts, and making sure our volunteers have what they need before they start their shift.

You would also be responsible for replenishing the food and beverages for volunteers as required and keeping the tent tidy and clean. Working here will improve your communication, organization, and cheeriness!

Site Tear Down

Join in the fun and help the runners replenish and celebrate their success. This job may involve restocking the food and beverage area and helping with site management. The main focus of this position will be post-race tear down and packing of supplies.

Be ready to do some moderate lifting and wear something comfy on your feet. You’ll have to be ready to show your teamwork and attention to detail with this job!

Kit Pick Up & Expo Volunteer Positions- Zatzman Sportsplex

Kit Pick Up

Each registered participant receives a participant t-shirt and a bib with a timing chip which they will need on race day. Your role at Kit Pick Up is to cross-check the registration details and provide the appropriate race kit including a t-shirt to the participant. You’ll need to be ready to communicate, and work as a team in this role!

This fast-paced role will require you to be on your feet for most of your shift, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes!

Virtual Race Kits Prep and Packaging

Help us pack race kits for our virtual participants! This shift involves a lot of standing and moving around. Each participant registered for the virtual race will receive a t-shirt, medal, and bib, which they will need to complete their run. These kits will be mailed out to participants.

This role requires attention to detail and organizational skills. You'll be working in an assembly line to efficiently pack race-kits.

Race Kits Prep & Packaging

Help us pack race kits for our participants! This shift involves a lot of standing and moving around. Each participant registered for the race will receive a t-shirt, medal, and bib (with some exceptions) which they will need to complete their run.

This role requires attention to detail and organizational skills. You'll be working in an assembly line to efficiently pack race-kits.

Set up Kit Pick up

In this role, you will help set up the Kit Pick Up location for when our Emera Blue Nose Marathon participants come to pick up their race kits and bibs.

Along with having a lot of fun, you’ll improve your teamwork and event execution skills. Be ready to do some moderate lifting and wear something comfy on your feet.

These tasks could range from moving carts, to carrying small parcels, to interacting with expo attendees and everything in between. If you are a team player who doesn't mind lending a hand where needed, this is the role for you!

Expo Support

The role allows you to engage with the thousands of visitors and exhibitors that join us at the Emera Blue Nose Marathon Expo.

Primarily, you will assist exhibitors with their move-in/tear down but will also carry out required tasks as needed by the Expo Director. These tasks could range from moving carts, to carrying small parcels, to interacting with expo attendees and everything in between. If you are a team player who doesn't mind lending a hand where needed, this is the role for you!

Greeter

You are key representatives of the Emera Blue Nose Marathon. You will act as a host welcoming anyone attending the Blue Nose Marathon Expo.

You must be ready to answer any inquiry ranging from event start times to location of the Kit Pick Up area and everything in between.

Blue Nose Store

Do you have retail and customer service experience? The Blue Nose Store is the place for you! This is a vital role that supports our event. You will help with the setup, display, and selling of our Blue Nose Swag. You will be responsible for organizing inventory, engaging with participants, volunteers and spectators, and ensuring a seamless shopping experience!

Marketing & Communication Volunteer Positions

Community Outreach

These volunteers help inform the community of the event coming! Three weeks prior to the Emera Blue Nose Marathon taking place, a key group of volunteers and our beloved Mascot, Myles, will cover all the routes of the race over the span of a week delivering our community notice. You will let residents and businesses know of street closures, parking bans, the route, ways to get involved, and much more. Get ready to walk your own Marathon over the course of a weekend to help us get the word out!

Park Outreach

These volunteers help inform the park community of the event coming! Three weeks prior to the Emera Blue Nose Marathon taking place, a key group of volunteers and our beloved Mascot, Myles, will cover the park portion of the race route delivering our community notice letting frequent park visitors know of the route, ways to get involved, and much more. Get ready to walk your own Marathon over the course of a weekend help us get the word out!
