OUR MISSION

Better Living is a non-profit organization. We support the individuals in our community in maintaining their independence, enhancing their social wellbeing, and optimizing their overall health and wellness through the provision of a wide range of community support services and leisure opportunities.

POSITION SUMMARY

To provide friendly, courteous service to customers, clients and staff at the Better Bistro.

KEY POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assist with food preparation when required (coffee, tea soup, sandwiches, salads)

2. Greet customers upon arrival and serve customers clients and staff in a friendly and courteous manner

3. Take Bistro orders

4. Accept payments, issue bills using the cash register system, and track finances and balance at the end of the shift.

5. Prepare and assist with catering and special events requests. (Time will be set up according to the type of catering service)

6. Maintain a clean Bistro kitchen and cooking equipment

*Bistro/kitchen is not exclusively vegan, vegetarian, Kosher or HMA certified and may involve preparation and sale of foods that do not comply with such dietary restrictions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

1. Punctual, reliable and patient.

2. Interpersonal and communication skills.

3. Customer service and food preparation skills an asset.

4. Knowledge of senior population and safe food handling protocol will be an asset.

5. Wear long pants (Jeans are acceptable).

6. Wear closed heels and closed toes flat shoes.

7. Recommended to wear long sleeves and comfortable clothing.

8. Aprons and hair net should be worn all times.

9. Disposable gloves should always be worn when handling ready to eat foods.

10. Keep hands, utensils, and work areas clean at all times.

11. Hands should always be washed prior to putting on gloves.

TRAINING PERIOD

1. Attend general information session.

2. On-the-job shadowing/scheduled training with Food Services Assistant or staff.

3. Staff provides on-going support, answer questions and explain policies.

4. Volunteer will be trained to follow special diet instructions and safe food handling protocol.

MINIMUM HOURS PER WEEK

3 hour shifts: Monday to Friday, between 9:30 am to 12:30pm OR 12:00pm to 2:30pm
