
BC Healthy Communities Society Board of Directors
BC Healthy Communities is currently seeking new members to join its Board of Directors. This is a unique opportunity to help guide a non-profit organization committed to advancing health and well-being across British Columbia through multi-sector collaboration, inclusive community engagement, and equity-driven policy work. Board members play a vital governance role—ensuring BCHC operates ethically, sustainably, and in alignment with its vision of healthy communities for all.
BCHC welcomes applicants from a wide range of backgrounds and lived experiences, with particular interest in individuals with experience in local government, rural/remote communities or community health and wellness. Directors typically commit three to four hours per month, including bimonthly meetings and committee involvement. Board members have a fiduciary duty to steer the organization towards a sustainable future by adopting sound, ethical, and legal governance and financial management policies, as well as making sure the non-profit has adequate resources to advance its mission. Consideration will be given to qualified individuals with a broad range of backgrounds in legal, community, labour and business environments. The selection process will recognize lived experience and volunteer roles as well as paid employment and academic achievements.

Experience and Qualifications
While previous experience as a director is not required, it is important that candidates for positions understand the roles and responsibilities of a member of a governance board and have the necessary experience and demonstrated skills to enable them to contribute to board decision-making and oversight.
Competencies and Personal Attributes
Collectively, the Board should comprise the following core competencies:
- Operational or technical expertise relevant to the operation of the organization including:
- strategic management and organizational change;
- operations;
- internal control and accounting;
- communications;
- public sector administration;
- human resources;
- labour relations;
- risk management;
- Accounting/Financial expertise;
- Legal expertise;
- Knowledge of government and understanding of the public sector environment;
- Knowledge and experience with Indigenous/non-Indigenous governments;
- Knowledge of current and emerging issues affecting the organization and its sector;
- Cultural competence;
- Lived experience in relation to the nature of the work of the organization, and
- Knowledge of the communities served by the organization.
All Directors should possess the following personal attributes:
- High ethical standards and integrity in professional and personal dealings;
- Appreciation of the responsibilities to the public;
- Ability and willingness to raise potentially controversial issues in a manner that encourages dialogue;
- Flexibility, responsiveness and willingness to consider others’ opinions;
- Capability to take a wide perspective on issues;
- Ability to listen and work as a team member;
- Strong reasoning skills;
- Understanding of the developmental disability sector;
- Commitment to community inclusion; and
- Ability and willingness to fulfill the time commitment required to carry out responsibilities.
Currently we are looking for:
- Members with local government experience;
- Members with community health/wellness initiatives, and
- Members with rural/remote community knowledge and experience.
Experience
The following skills are sought for Board members to bring to this organization:
- Demonstrated leadership excellence in recruitment, establishing service standards, evaluation, and effective direction to management;
- Five or more years of experience at a senior-management level preparing, maintaining and reporting on a budget;
- Excellent ability to interpret legislation and policies;
- Demonstrated understanding of governing legislation and experience interacting with provincial and municipal governments;
- Demonstrated cultural awareness and respect for human rights;
- Demonstrated awareness of discrimination and related factors and consequences; and
- Demonstrated ability to effectively listen, discuss and work effectively as part of a team.
Time Commitment
The overall time commitment is approximately 3-4 hours per month. This includes participation in bimonthly working meetings, various committee meetings and planning sessions, and the Annual General Meeting (September).
All meetings take place during regular weekday working hours (between 8:30am and 4:30pm) and are typically held on Mondays via Teams or in person. Additional board meetings may be scheduled at the request of the Board Chair. In addition, each Board member sits on at least one (1) committee. Committee meetings traditionally occur approximately a week prior to the Board meetings but may be scheduled at alternative times if necessary. Committee meetings are typically held virtually.
Term
Board members are appointed for a term of up to three (3) years, with a maximum of two (2) term appointments. Board members are eligible for further election after a one-year break following the maximum six (6) consecutive years of service.
