VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

POSITION: Advocacy Specialist

LOCATION: Hybrid, mostly remote with occasional travel within Peel Region.

REPORTS TO: Executive Director, Managing Director and Executive Team

TIME COMMITMENT: 5-7 hours/week

ABOUT US:

The Community Climate Council (CCC) is based in Peel Region, Ontario, led by a committed

team of environmental advocate volunteers who are driven by the urgency of the climate crisis.

Founded with the vision of creating a platform for local voices to demand action, our work is

rooted in community-led solutions. We approach every project with a focus on collaboration,

and equity, ensuring that our efforts are both community-centered and solution-driven.

ROLE DESCRIPTION:

We are seeking an Advocacy Specialist to support The CCC in our climate change advocacy

efforts. Since we were founded, we believe that community members, especially youth, should

be part of shaping the future they live in. This position plays a pivotal role in allowing that to

happen.

You will stay up to date on local news, environmental or human rights issues, and monitor local

council agendas. You may collaborate with the CCC team, elected officials, policymakers, and

coordinate advocacy campaigns to drive positive change in policy and public opinion.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Civic Engagement Coordination

• Review and analyze municipal and regional council agendas and delegation opportunities.

• Identify opportunities for organizational engagement within municipal and regional decision-making processes.

Advocacy & Campaign Coordination

• Coordinate environmental advocacy campaigns aligned with the Community Climate Council’s values.

• Develop or facilitate environmental advocacy training sessions for internal members like how to delegate at city hall (previous experience is an asset).

• Support and empower youth to lead conversations with elected officials by organizing youth-driven forums, roundtable interviews, and relationship-building spaces.

• Build pathways to strengthen youth–politician engagement and relationship building (e.g., establishing a CCC youth advocacy branch).

• Support CCC members in preparing delegations, presentations, and public statements.
• Represent CCC at municipal meetings, public consultations, and community events.

Storytelling & Influence

• Document and share CCC case studies of successful climate collaboration.
• Contribute to expanding CCC’s reach to regional and national audiences and help

position CCC as a model for community-driven climate advocacy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Skills and Experience: ○ MUST have experience with city/town delegations in the past ○ Passion for civic engagement and keeping informed on current social justice

issues, with a focus on relevance to Peel Region.

○ Ideally lives in Peel Region (but GTA residents will also be considered) ○ Has access to a vehicle to occasionally present in-person (likely in Peel Region) ○ Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to articulate

complex environmental justice issues and effectively engage with diverse

stakeholders.

○ Experience in civic engagement, particularly in the field of climate change and environmental sustainability.

○ Understanding of legislative processes at local, regional, and national levels. ○ Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to synthesize complex

information into clear and compelling messages.

○ Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, as well as independently with minimal supervision.

○ Experience in project management, including planning, organizing, and prioritizing tasks.

○ Proficiency with Google Workspace; familiarity with Slack is an asset. ○ Experience in event planning or community outreach is a bonus. ○ Asset if they volunteered for any political parties or elections in the past
