Kamloops Partner Assisted Learning (KPAL) is an adult literacy program that connects volunteer tutors with adult learners seeking to improve their basic skills in reading, writing, math and English communication. KPAL serves learners from a range of backgrounds and life experiences, supporting them on their journey towards greater confidence, independence and opportunity.

As a KPAL Adult Literacy Tutor, you will support adult learners in building foundational skills that help them achieve their personal, educational, and employment goals. As a tutor you will provide one-on-one guidance in a safe, respectful environment, creating real change through connection and support. Sessions are learner-centered, focusing on the learner’s goals, whether that’s everyday communication, employment, further education, or personal growth.

This is the right role for you if you are someone who:

Is empathetic, compassionate, and a good listener

Has strong English language and communication skills

Is patient and encouraging

An Adult Literacy Tutor's main tasks are:

Meet with a learner (usually 1–2 hours/week) at a library or community space

Support goals like reading, writing, basic math, or speaking

Keep brief notes and share progress with the Coordinator

Join a short orientation and occasional check-ins or trainings

Training and ongoing support are provided by KPAL staff. Prior teaching experience is not required; strong communication skills, patience, understanding, and compassion are important!

We ask that tutors commit to approximately 1–2 hours per week, usually for a minimum of 6 months, to allow for consistent progress.
