Salary Range: $54,673 to $65,866 plus Benefits including HOOPP Pension
Position Summary:
The Accountant supports the financial operations of Regent Park Community Health Centre (RPCHC) with a focus on general ledger maintenance, financial reporting, and ensuring the accuracy of day-to-day accounting transactions. This is a mid-level role ideal for someone with a strong foundation in accounting and non-profit finance, who is ready to take responsibility for core financial processes and contribute to audit readiness and financial integrity. The role balances transactional accounting with opportunities to support financial reporting, compliance, and process improvement.
The Accountant is responsible for supporting programs at RPCHC, including accurate monitoring and analysis of the financial results, processing all payables and receivables, preparing monthly and quarterly financial reports, forecasting cash flow needs and working with programs to analyze variances and provide explanations in a timely manner for internal and external purposes. Additionally, this role will support the rest of the Finance team on a variety of tasks including reconciliations and reporting.
Responsibilities Include:
General Accounting
- Oversee and perform full-cycle accounts payable and receivable processing, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with policies and funder requirements.
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare monthly journal entries, accruals, and adjustments.
- Assist with month-end and year-end close processes.
- Monitor and reconcile bank and investment accounts.
- Support inter-fund and inter-program reconciliations.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare internal financial reports and supporting schedules, including variance analysis and commentary, for review by the Director of Finance & Operations.
- Assist in the preparation of external financial statements, funding reports, and government filings.
- Support the annual audit process, including preparing working papers and responding to auditor inquiries.
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards (ASPE or PSAS, as applicable) and organizational policies.
Budgeting & Analysis Support
- Collaborate with program managers and other members of the finance team to provide actual vs. budget variance analysis and grant tracking reports.
- Provide financial data to support program reporting and funding proposals.
- Assist in tracking restricted funding and ensuring appropriate allocations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Post-secondary education in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- Working towards or possession of a CPA designation is an asset.
- Minimum 3 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit or public sector environment.
- Solid understanding of Canadian accounting standards (ASPE or PSAS) and fund accounting principles.
- Proficient with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, Microsoft Dynamics or similar) and MS Excel.
- Experience with payroll or accounts payable processes is an asset.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Familiarity with funder reporting requirements, government contracts, or restricted funding is an asset.
