2026 Tax Preparer Volunteer

Income Tax Preparer and make a meaningful impact by directly supporting individuals and families living

on a low-income file their tax returns.

Program Overview:

In partnership with the Canada Revenue Agency and the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program

(CVITP), we serve thousands of clients annually, providing professional, free tax filing services to

marginalized populations.

As a volunteer, you will engage with clients, prepare their tax returns, and assess their eligibility for tax

benefits and credits. We provide comprehensive training and on-the-job mentoring, ensuring you have

the necessary skills and resources to excel in your role. We offer both in-person and virtual tax service

options, enabling us to continue serving our clients effectively.

Position Summary:

Applications are now open for the upcoming tax season. You will be contacted in November to

schedule an interview.

As a tax preparer volunteer, you will:

• Complete online and in-person tax trainings provided by WoodGreen and the CRA

• File client tax returns using UFILE software

• Explain tax return results and answer tax related questions

• Adhere to WoodGreen and CRA policies and procedures

• Provide high-quality support and customer service to a diverse group of clients

• Use interpretation services as needed for clients who have limited English-speaking skills

• Have an opportunity to connect and build new friendships with a large community of volunteers

Skills & Qualifications:

We are looking for volunteers who are:

• Respectful, empathetic, and sensitive to the needs of individuals from diverse cultural, ethnic,

and socioeconomic backgrounds – including newcomers, refugees, and individuals experiencing

crisis

• Strong communicators with a minimum Level 6 Canadian Language Benchmark in English

• Excellent in using computers and navigating digital tools (including UFILE, Microsoft Teams, etc.)

• Familiar with Canadian tax documents and tax policies, or have experience filing personal tax

returns (an asset, but not mandatory)

Eligibility Requirements:

You must:

• Be 18 years of age or older

• Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN) which cannot expire any time during the year you

volunteer

• Have filed your 2024 tax return

• Apply for and have an active EFILE number and RepID

• Provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Screening Check

• Provide 2 references

If volunteering remotely, you must have:

• A computer with a Windows operating system and the ability to download UFile software

• A private and quiet space to speak with clients over the phone

• A reliable internet connection

Commitment:

• Mandatory self-directed online and in-person trainings in February

• Commit to a minimum of two 3-hour shifts per week (March to end of May 2026), and choose

from morning, afternoon, evening, or Saturday shifts – in-person or virtual!

• Must maintain the same weekly schedule for the full duration of tax season
