Child & Youth Worker
no work experience required

One hour a week from you. A whole new outlook for them.

Imagine being the reason a kid goes from dreading school to actually believing in themselves. As a Study Buddy mentor, you'll meet one-on-one weekly with a girl or gender-diverse youth (ages 7-17) to work through schoolwork, set goals, and build the confidence that sticks with them for life.

"Volunteering with Big Sisters as a Study Buddy for 5 years was very fulfilling as I was helping a young girl in a way I would have wanted to be helped during the tough times at school."Study Buddy Jessica

What you’ll gain:

  • Communication & problem-solving skills you'll use everywhere, in school, at work, in life
  • The ability to explain things clearly and patiently (harder than it sounds, and so worth it)
  • Real experience supporting youth academically and personally, a standout addition to any resume or application
  • A sense of accomplishment watching someone build confidence, believe in themselves, and feel excited about learning
  • A dedicated caseworker by your side from start to finish, checking in at key moments
  • A community of fellow mentors, events & workshops to keep you growing

Commitment:

  • 1 hour per week
  • Minimum 6 months
  • 1:1, tailored to your mentee’s grade and goals
  • Location: local library, quiet environment

Eligibility:

  • Be 19 years or older and identify as a woman, non-binary, transgender, or gender-diverse individual.
  • Complete a free online Criminal Records Check.
  • Have been a Canadian resident for at least one year (or provide an International Criminal Records Check).
  • Submit a Driver's Abstract if you plan to drive youth in your car.
