About us
North York Women's Centre (NYWC) is a community of diverse women. We work to advance equality and empower women to effect positive change.
Guiding Principles: The following guiding principles inform and guide all aspects of our work:
● Promoting equity, equality and social and economic justice for all women, and
● Working within a framework of anti-oppression, anti-racism and feminism.
We practice feminism by:
● Asking questions from a women’s perspective,
● Acknowledging a power imbalance to the disadvantage of women, and
● Demanding that women’s personal experiences become recognized in public policies.
As an organization that works to advance equality, we work collaboratively with other service providers and sector networks to enhance women's access to services, promote their welfare and active participation in society, raise awareness of women's human rights, and promote an environment that advances gender equality.
As a service provider, we deliver programs for women, by women, including
● Women's Empowerment: Our skill-based series builds strengths and personal power to promote self-confidence and success
● Violence Prevention and Support Services: We offer programs and services for women who have experienced violence or are at risk of abuse
● Community Building: Our drop-in programs promote social interaction, peer-to-peer learning and mutual support
● Leadership Training: We offer training and internship opportunities that build competencies and experience in feminist practice and group leadership
● System Navigation: We provide information, referral and practical support to help women access services and meet their immediate needs
● Collaborations and Hosted Programs: We work with others to deliver programs and activities that respond to community needs
