Volunteer Career Mentor

Support Queer Refugees & Newcomers

Make a meaningful impact by helping LGBTQI+ refugees and newcomers build successful careers in Canada.

Commitment: Approximately 2 hours per week (online), plus up to 2 additional hours per month for an in-person meeting if needed.

What You'll Do:

As a Volunteer Career Mentor, you will:

• Meet virtually with a client for approximately 2 hours per week.
• Provide guidance on resume and cover letter development.
• Help clients prepare for job interviews.
• Support clients with networking and job search strategies.
• Share your knowledge of Canadian workplace culture and expectations.
• Encourage clients as they work toward their employment goals.
• Participate in occasional team meetings and training sessions.
• Maintain respectful, confidential, and trauma-informed relationships with clients.

Who We Are Looking For:

We're looking for 5 volunteers who:

• Have lived in Canada for at least 5 years.
• Have strong English communication skills.
• Are compassionate, patient, and committed to supporting newcomers.
• Have an interest in mentorship, employment support, or community engagement.
• Can commit to approximately 2 hours per week for at least four months.
• Are comfortable working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Assets (not required):

• French language skills.
• Experience in recruitment, human resources, career coaching, education, or management.

Training & Support Provided:

No previous mentoring experience is required. All selected volunteers will receive:

1. Trauma-Informed Care Training to support refugees and newcomers with empathy and confidence.
2. A full-day Career Mentorship Training covering:

• Resume writing
• Cover letter development
• Interview preparation
• Networking strategies
• LinkedIn optimization
• Canadian workplace culture
• Effective mentorship techniques
