Volunteer Web Developer (Project Lead / Builder)

Organization: The Bros Before Lows Foundation

Location: 100% Remote

Position Type: Volunteer (Eligible for College Credit)

Time Commitment: Flexible / Self-Paced (Approx. 5–10 hours per month)

Department: Digital Strategy & Technology

About Us

At The Bros Before Lows (BBL) Foundation, our slogan is "Where Brotherhood Meets Purpose." We are a registered non-profit arts and mental health organization dedicated to directly combating the male suicide crisis in Canada. Every single day, 12 men in Canada take their own lives. We provide a low-barrier, high-impact “third space” that bridges the gap between peer-led isolation reduction and professional healthcare systems.

We are actively expanding our digital footprint to support our nationwide FORCE 184 Facilitator Network and build out our National Men's Support Portal.

Role Overview

We aren't looking for someone to maintain existing code, fix minor CSS bugs, or handle routine site updates.

We are looking for a developer with vision—someone who wants to identify a problem, conceive a digital solution, and execute an end-to-end project from scratch. Whether that’s architecting an interactive community tool, building a streamlined resource directory, or developing a custom web portal for our facilitators, you take full ownership of the idea from concept to deployment.

This role is completely self-paced (5–10 hours per month), giving you total creative and technical autonomy to build something that directly impacts men's lives.

What You Will Do

  • Conceive & Pitch: Identify a high-impact digital opportunity for BBL (e.g., interactive support tools, intake automation, facilitator resources, or community-driven features) and pitch your project scope.
  • Architect & Build: Design, code, and deploy your project from end to end using the tools and stack best suited for the solution.
  • Full Project Ownership: Own the entire development lifecycle—from wireframing and prototyping to final integration into our live digital ecosystem.
  • Collaborate & Consult: Connect directly with our operations team and IT advisors to ensure your project aligns with our security, privacy (PHIPA/PIPEDA), and organizational goals.

Potential Project Ideas You Could Lead

  • Interactive Support Directory: Build a web-based, searchable database connecting men to localized peer circles and mental health resources.
  • Facilitator Portal Tools: Design custom web components or dashboards to support our growing network of certified facilitators.
  • Art & Creative Showcase Hub: Develop a digital platform integrated into our web ecosystem that showcases member artwork, music, and creative expression as tools for healing and coping.
  • Custom Interactive Features: Bring your own innovative idea to the table that helps men break isolation and find community.

What We Are Looking For

  • Proactive Mindset: You don't wait for a task list; you see a gap, build a plan, and execute it.
  • Technical Capability: Proficiency in modern web development (HTML/CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Vue, Next.js, or CMS-backed platforms) capable of delivering a functional project.
  • Self-Directed Pace: Ability to manage your own project milestones within a flexible 5–10 hour/month schedule.
  • Purpose-Driven: A genuine passion for leveraging technology to solve real-world human problems and support men's mental health.

Why Volunteer With Us?

  • Total Creative Autonomy: Zero maintenance busywork. You pitch the feature, you build it, and you ship it.
  • Portfolio Showcase: Gain a flagship, live, production-grade project to feature in your portfolio that proves your ability to build and launch software independently.
  • Flexible Self-Scheduling: Work entirely on your own terms and time.
  • Real Public Health Impact: Your code will directly connect men in crisis to life-saving peer support and brotherhood.
