OUTREACH

COORDINATOR – Parttime, contract

The Kamloops Film Society is seeking an Indigenous Outreach Coordinator to support meaningful community engagement and relationship-building in advance of the 2026 Stseptékwles re Sk’elép Indigenous Film Festival and future Indigenous programming initiatives.

Working closely with the KFS team, the successful candidate will help strengthen relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, schools, artists, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community leaders throughout the Thompson-Nicola region and BC Interior.

This role is focused on listening, building connections, increasing awareness of Indigenous programming opportunities, and supporting culturally respectful engagement practices. The ideal candidate is someone who values relationship-building, community connection, and the role that film and storytelling can play in creating meaningful dialogue and shared experiences.

POSITION DETAILS

• Position: Indigenous Outreach Coordinator
• Status: Temporary, part-time, grant-funded
• Contract Term: 10-week contract between August and October 2026
• Hours: 15–20 hours per week (flexible schedule; occasional evenings and weekends may be required)
• Compensation: $25.00 per hour
• Location: Hybrid/remote based in Kamloops, BC, with travel throughout the Thompson-Nicola region as required, in person at Paramount Theatre Sep 25-27, 2026 (festival dates)
• Start Date: As soon as a suitable candidate is identified

This position is funded through a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.

ABOUT THE KAMLOOPS FILM SOCIETY

The Kamloops Film Society (KFS) brings people together through film as a registered charitable organization operating out of the historic Paramount Theatre in downtown Kamloops. For 50 years, KFS has worked with the community to bring the world to Kamloops through diverse film programming, festivals, and inclusive cultural experiences. The Society curates year-round programming—including the Kamloops Film Festival, KISS Competition, CineLoops French Film Festival, and the Stseptékwles re Sk’elép Indigenous Film Festival—while supporting local filmmakers and contributing to a thriving arts ecosystem in the region.

ABOUT THE STSEPTÉKWLES RE SK’ELÉP INDIGENOUS FILM FESTIVAL

The Stseptékwles re Sk’elép (Coyote Stories) Indigenous Film Festival, presented in collaboration with Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc, celebrates the strength and diversity of Indigenous storytelling through film. The festival features outstanding

Indigenous films and highlights Indigenous artists through meaningful engagement opportunities, conversations, and community events over three days of programming leading up to National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The 2026 Indigenous Film Festival will take place September 25–27 at the Paramount Theatre.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Indigenous Community Engagement & Relationship Building

• Build respectful, reciprocal relationships with First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and Indigenous organizations throughout the Thompson-Nicola region and BC Interior.
• Develop and implement outreach strategies to increase awareness of and participation in the 2026 Indigenous Film Festival.
• Build partnerships with Indigenous communities, schools, organizations, artists, and community groups.
• Attend community meetings, cultural events, and engagement opportunities as a representative of the Kamloops Film Society.
• Support relationships with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community leaders, and Indigenous filmmakers.

Festival & Program Support

• Support outreach and community engagement activities for the 2026 Stseptékwles re Sk’elép Indigenous Film Festival.
• Coordinate meetings, presentations, and engagement sessions with community partners.
• Support culturally respectful event planning and programming.
• Gather feedback from community participants and partners to help evaluate programming and identify opportunities for future engagement.

Communications & Organizational Support

• Create culturally relevant outreach materials and communications.
• Prepare correspondence, engagement documentation, and partnership records.
• Support internal learning opportunities related to Indigenous engagement, cultural safety, and reconciliation.
• Contribute to ongoing efforts to strengthen culturally safe practices within the organization.
• Assist with project tracking, reporting, and budget administration as required.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

We are looking for a candidate who has:

• Experience building respectful relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, or community members.
• Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, histories, contemporary issues, and communities in British Columbia.
• Understanding of Indigenous rights, reconciliation, anti-racism, and the importance of culturally safe engagement.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and facilitation skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple priorities.
• Experience with community engagement, event planning, arts programming, or project coordination is considered an asset.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating with a small team.
• Ability to travel throughout the Thompson-Nicola region as required.
